C.,met Tuesday night, March fourth at eight o’clock at the home of Mesdames Seth Meek and Butler Holmes. The chaplain, Mrs. A. J. Bow ers, Jr., opened the meeting with the ritual. A most interesting historical program was given. A paper, “Lee As An Educator”, written by Mrs. H. O. Long, was read by Mrs. Duncan Johnson, Sr. Mrs. R. H. Wright gave a most inter esting account of Wade Hamp ton as a leader. Mrs. Seth Meek told of Hampton’s visit to New berry during Reconstruction days. Miss Elizabeth Dominick gave a most interesting account of one of South Carolina’s great educators, D. B. Johnson, found er of Winthrop College. A sec ond biography of M. C. Butler was read by Mrs. D. L. Nance. Education in South Carolina was the topic of the gleanings given by Mrs. W. P. Miller. The business session was pre sided over by Mrs. R. H. Wright, 1st vice president. The main business of the chapter was a discussion as to how the chapter might increase its financial sta tus. A committee was appoined to make plans to hold a rum mage sale in the near future. The chaplain closed the meeting with the mizpah benediction. During the social hour, the hostesses served delicious sand wiches, cookies and hot tea. CONCERT PERFORMERS AT NEWBERRY COLLEGE On Monday evening at eight o’clock in the auditorium of Newberry College, citizens of Newberry will have the oppor tunity to hear a program of mu sic presented by a group of tal ented artists. Appearing on the program are: Hendrik De Boer, tenor; James Jay Swann, bass-baritone; Rose Arbanas, soprano, and Ag nes Blafka, pianist. This group of concert perform ers are appearing under the auspices of Newberry College as part of its program of .extra curricular activities. Each mem ber of the group is a stellar per former in his own right, and recognized as such. The music of this group is of the best, and their program is most enjoyable. A cordial invitation is extended to the public to be present on this occasion. There will be no admission charge. COUNTS TWINS DEATH The infant twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Counts died early Friday morning at the Newberry county hospital. Burial was held Friday at Po- maria cemetery. They are survived by their parents, Mr. James W. and Helen Ragsdale Counts; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. E. Counts, Pomaria; and mater nal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude H. Ragsdale, Blairs. FURMAN SUMMER SESSION WILL OPEN JUNE 16 The first term of the Furman university summer session is scheduled to open June 16 with the second semester set for July 24, Dr. Henry Grady Owens, summer school director announc ed today. I do not feel any lack of enthusiasm after more than twenty years of en tertaining the public. But I find it necessary to be ‘on my toes’ to keep my performance new and different.” During these years Birch and Company have toured through out the United States and Cana da. Several months each sum mer are spent in creating new effects and building spectacular illusions in a magical work-shop which is completely equipped with the finest, most modem electrical machinery. Perhaps his greatest achieve ment and most interesting illu sion is the Vanishing Pony, in which “Princess,” a beautiful miniature horse, is caused to dis appear while suspended in mid air. Many other thrilling illu sions are included in the Birch repertoire, and a musical inter lude will be offered by Miss Mabel Sperry, well-known xylo phone artist. “We believe we have been of real service to our community in booking the Birch engage ment. It is not often that we are permitted to view a performance of such real merit,” said Presi dent W. C. Huffman of the New berry Lions club. Gardenhire receiv ed a letter from her daughter, Mrs. Ej Harold Sunday (Rose mary King) Monday morning from China saying that she landed in Tsingstao, China on March first, and when she arriv ed her husband, Sergeant Sun day had* a “five-room house completely furnished, even to an electric hot-water heater waiting for her.” She further stated that they have a Chinese servant who does all the housework, cooking and laundrying for $4.00 per week.
