COUNTS The members of the Newberry County Council of Farm Women are very much interested in the District Meeting wh’ch includes 16 counties in this part of the State. This meet ing is scheduled to be held in New berry at the High school auditorium on Saturday, October 6th at 10:30 o’clock. Mrs W T . E. Senn of the Smyrna community I is district di rector and will preside. All New berry county members are urged to be present as there will be no other fall meeting. Yellow corn should be fed laying hens because it supplies an impor tant food factor known as vitamin A This vitamin is one of several that are necessary in nutrition. Vi tamin A is necessary to obtain the best egg production and egg hatch- ability. It is supplied in yellow corn but not to any extent in white corn or other grains. For this reason yellow corn instead of white should be fed to chickens. Vitamin A is also supplied in green leafy plants, such as clover, small grains, and green grass. Vitamin D is essential for good egg production and for egg hatch- ability Without this vitamin the hen cannot assimilate egg shell material with which to cover the egg. The natural source of vitamin D is direct sunshine and giving hens access to out-of-doors in the sunshine is the cheapest and most efficient way of supplying this Vitamin. Where con ditions, such as second-story build ings or lack of space, make it unde sirable to turn the birds out, vitamin D may be supplied by feeding a vita min D supplement The choice of the product should be determined by the cost and amount of Vitamin D in the product used. The most important mineral in poultry feeding and the one that has to be supplied in the greatest amount is calcium carboate which is needed for egg shell formation. This min eral is best supplied by feeding oys ter shell which should always be kept before the hens When hens are lay ing every day it is necessary for them to assimilate constantly enough egg shell material to cover the eggs and for this reason laying hens must have ample quantity of it. Water comprises the larger por tion of the hen’s body and of the egg. It is used to soften the feed and it aids in digestion, absorption, and assimilation If hens are depriv ed of water for only a short time, egg production is reduced. Therefore, an abundant supply of water before the birds at all times is necessary. A range supplying an ample quan tity of green feed should be provided. Green feed is more important now than ever before since all poultry feeds contain a much lower percent age of animal protein and higher per centage of plant protein, than in former years. These plant proteins does not supply the quantity of vita mins and minerals as do animal pro teins A good green range is one of the p>oultryman’s best assurances of avoiding nutritional troubles. If an abundance of green feed is supplied and the hens are allowed to range in the sun, most any kind of feed can be used successfully.
