The first Girl S-:out organization in Newberry was perfected more than a quarter of a century ago when four alert-minded twelve-year-bid girls asked a teacher of the county to be their leader and organize a Girl Scout troop. And from this re quest Troop No. 1 was orgainized twenty-eight years ago with Balnche Davidson as captain and Lucile La- than, first lieutenant, with 24 girls registered with national headquarters Girl Scouts, as a lone troop. The following year another troop was orgainized at the insistence of 20 younger girls, who were eager to be Brownies. This troop was directed by Lucile Lathan. These girls ranging in age from 10 to 12 were registered with national headquarters in July 1918 with the tenderfoot rank when reg istered. They were rapidly advanc ed in rank, and took many tests for I proficiency badges, one patrol work ed faithfully for many months try ing to learn to tat.
