Neel received a letter from their son, Staff. Sgt. John Neel Thursday afternoon, writ ten on September first from his base in Italy. Sgt. Neel was reported missing by the War department on July 22nd and no further word had been received by his parents. Sgt. Neel was an aerial gunner on a B-24 bomber. MISPLACED LILY The demure young bride, her face a revelation of winsome innocence, slowly walked down the church aisle, clinging to the arm of her father. As she reached the platform before the altar, her dainty foot brushed a pot ted flower, upsetting it . Out of 75 South Carolina girls and 60 babies, here are some results of our work: 3 of our 15 year old girls have re turned to their homes and to school, protected from gossip and already making good. 1 of our girls married while at the Home (not the father of the baby) and she, her husband, and the baby are the happiest of families today. 6 of our girls married after leav ing the Home. 21 of our girls are already earn ing their own living (dietitian, nurs ing, manager, secretary, stenograph er, sales work, defense work, etc.) and still keep in touch with the Home for advice and friendship. 16 of our girls took their babies with them when they returned to their own homes. 34 girls decided their babies would have a better chance financially and in home relationships by being adopt ed and so released them to the Children’s Bureau at Columbia to be placed for adoption. Our girls are mothers—they have not run away from the consequences of their mistakes, and ths pain of signing away their babies for always is a hurt that stays with these moth ers. We are trying to develop these unmarried mothers into worth-while women of the future—we are not just giving them maternity care to serve their present need. The Florence Crittenton Home does not: Come under the head of a govern ment institution, financially or as a penal institution. It is a home, run hy a board of directors and trustees, prominent local men a nd women, and is supported by voluntary contribu tions. Make life easy for its girls, but rather with plenty of work and train ing, fits them physically, mentally, and morally to face the present and the future with poise and intelligence. Refuse a girl unable to pay the fee, if her physical requirements ar« satisfactory. Accept a girl unless it is her first experience as an unmarried mohter. Accept a girl unless some member of her family, a close friend, or a welfare organisation is aware of the entire situation. Accept a girl without a physical examination Place any babies for adoption— this is done for the Home by the Children’s Bureau at Columbia. Atocept girls from any state but South Carolina. Allow any girl to leave the Home until satisfactory arrangements have been made for the mother and the child—^permanent, not temporary, ar rangements. A group of American officers land ed in England during a particularly rainy period and spent the first' ten days sloshing around in an almost oontinual downpour . One evening one of them looked out of a window saw the barrage ballons tugging at their cables and said: “Why don’t they cut those ropes | and let this place sink?” SERVICE STARS? I A two-star General returning to camp one evening, couldn’t produce his identification. The rookie on guard duty, unimpressed, refused to let him pass through the gates. Fi nally, the exasperated General bent forward, pointed to the stars on his shoulders, and bellowed: “Do you know what these mean?” “Sure,” piped up the rookie, “they mean you have a couple sons in the service.” POLITICIAN, OF COURSE A surgeon, an architect and a poli tician disputed which belonged to the oldest profession. The surgeon claimed the distinc tion because Eve was made from Adam’s rib. That, he said, was sur gery. “But,” said the architect, “before the advent of Adam order was made out of chaos and that was architec ture.” “Admitted,” said the politician, “but who created the chaos?” VOLUNTEERS A young couple asked the preach er to marry them immediately fed lowing the Sunday morning service. When the time came, the minister arose to say: “Will those who wish to be united in the bonds of Holy Matrimony please come forward.” There was a great stir as twenty- three women and one man approach ed the altar. WAITING FOR FALL An unobtrusive gentleman in the museum was gazing rapturously at a huge oil painting of a shapely girl dressed in only a few strategically arranged leaves.
