MEETING OF UDC CHAPTER
Due to the fact that the State and
the General UDC conventions have
had the dates of their annual meet
ings advanced, it was necessary that
Drayton Rutherford chapter hold
an earlier meeting than usual so as
to get reports, credentials, etc., in
order before the time limit for their
receipt.
Sixteen members met at the home
of Mrs. R. D. Wright on Tuesday,
September 1, with Mrs. Hunter
Brown associate hostess. This was
the first meeting over which Mrs.
Brown, the new president, presided.
A very welcome visitor was Mrs. J.
S. Wooten of Columbia, a former as-
tive member of the chapter.
l It was unanimously voted to make
Mrs. P. F. Baxter an honorary mem
ber for life, she having given many
years of faithful, loyal service in
the chapter.

A former Newberry girl is president
of the Arizona division, and was a
leader in putting across this sale.
She is now Mrs. Harry Pryor, form

served at the close of the meeting.
HOSPITAL AUXILIARY

auxiliary will meet at the nurses
home Thursday, September 17 at 4.
Each member is urged to be present
as this is the time for payment of
dues.

“Whereas, a crisis exists in our
war production program which can be
solved only by the patriotic coopera
tion of the American people and we
are faced with a serious shortage of
steel scrap and other vital materials,
and
“Whereas, the steel industry op
erates on the basis of 60 per cent
metal from pig iron and 40 per cent
metal from re-melted scrap metal,
and
“Whereas, about 40 per cent of
every tank, every ship, every sub
marine, and every gun is made of
scrap iron and steel, and
“Whereas, the South Carolina Bot
tlers of Carbonated Beverages are
undertaking the collection of scrap
metal over the entire State,

heartily cooperate with the local

Here’s what we will do:
We will furnish gratis our trucks to send anywhere for any
amount of scrap metal you can collect; and our loyal sales
men have volunteered their own time to bring it in. This
junk will be sold at prevailing prices and the entire pro
ceeds donated to the Red Cross and Women’s Council of
Civilian Defense for the soldiers Center in the Old Court
House.

Ransack your own cellar, attic, and garage for anything
made of metal (old pipe, drums, valves, furnace parts,
toys, batteries, lighting fixtures, motor parts, tools, etc.)
Collect all you can, then phone us or tell your nearest re
tail soft drink dealer.

They will aid you and us in locating, collecting and bringing in every possible pound of scrap metal.
