Clemson lost to a Carolina team that for the first half was a miracle team for the day and that set ton gues wagging that will keep up until next year this time but look over the country and upsets are the rule this season as Tulane, Georgia, Tennes see, and others have tasted defeat so what except to enliven our State Race. Every week sees some team with an unbeaten record go down and that bowl to get an unbeaten team may 'be only the Rose bowl and that is doubt ful right now. Duke, Minnesota, Notre. Dame, and a few others of big time football may survive so where will the others come from. For seven long years Caro lina had waited and even the most rabid Tiger fan knew it couldn’t last forever, the win will help the gate next year, ’cause more interest and will help football in this State more than we may imagine. The Clemson-Carolina game, while the big game of the state, isn’t the whole season and a big Furman team that has been a sad disappointment may upset the Gamecocks and what have you then? No, don’t think the season ended with the Fair game. It Is So Bill? Grapevine reports are that Bill Laval will be at Furman next year and if so Newberry will lose one of the best coaches in southern football and the old man will be going back where he put South Carolina football on the map. Bill made Furman a power in south ern football went to Carolina where the Gamecocks stopped Clemson three straight seasons—their longest run of the fair series and then he went to scouting for the Boston Red Sox in Baseball. Dutch McLean left New berry the powers he brought Bill to Newberry and' every one knows that Bill sent Newberry along the way to better football and if the draft hadn’t ruined him the Indians would have gone places this season. Even now he has the neucleus of a fine team next year that may make his last years team a second rater. Bill has not the money here he once had to call upon but he put a school spirit in Newberry that is getting stronger each year and if Bill isn’t leaving I expect to see the Indians play big teams right up on the hill and pay good guarantees to get better foot ball in Newberry. Bill Laval has worked to give New berry a football team they could be proud of and he has succeeded as the crowds now and before he came will testify where now they fill the stands once they hardly paid the officials. In conclusion let me say, Bill, if and when you do leave, you have done more to put Newberry on the Football map; got more real school spirit among the townspeople; in fact, made Newberry football* more than I have ever known it to be and I have been around here a few years myself. Carolina Boys In Majors South Carolina boys are making a name for the state in the big leagues as Kirby Higby with Brooklyn, Buck Newsome of Detroit, and Mickey Liv ingston of the Phillies, along with White of the Cards', and Buck New- some may be back next season while there are others in the big show from the Palmetto State. Last season we pulled for Buck Newsome and Old Bob came through, This season we had Higby of the Dod gers while Kirby didn't set any woods afire in the series he was a BIG help in winning the first flag the Dodgers have won in twenty years and justified the one hundred thous and grand paid for him. Buck had a so-so year as did the Tigers so he did better than his team. White from Pacolet, had a whale of a year almost pitched the cards to a flag and will get a raise in pay next year which the cards don’t give like Christmas toys. Mickey Livingstone, our own Newberry boy, had the mis fortune to be sick and- a sore arm most of the season but competent writers say he has one of the best arms up there and next season may be worth the same price the Phillies paid for Higby, if so, a hundred grand AIN’T hay in the epworth league much less the big show. Mick ey will play lots of ball in the big time so we are not worried because to be mamed FIRST string catcher in your first year even though you are sick most of it isn’t half bad when many never stay up a whole season. MIMS AGAIN HEADS DRYS Mullins, Oct. 25.—The fifty-eighth annual convention of the South Car olina Woman’s Christian Temper ance union opened at the First Bap tist church here Friday morning and will continue throughout Sunday. Ses sions have been held morning, after noon and evening, with/ Mrs. J. L. Mims, state president, of Edgefield, presiding. The sessions have been featured with the presence of the national president, Mrs. Ida B. Wise Smith, of Evanston, 111., who appeared in an address Friday evening and assisted with the program throughout Friday and Saturday. Tonight’s program was under the sponsorship of Mrs. J. H. Harvey of Pinopolis, state Y. T. C. Secretary and the Rev. A. D. Betts, of Orange burg, and featured a program espe cially for the young people of the or ganization. Others attending the convention in cluded, Mrs. J. P. Byars, Mrs. O. M. Edison, Mrs. Paul Foster, of Snartan- burg; Mrs. Mamie Tillman of Edge- field; Mrs. N. R.
