Miss Grace Wilbur left last Thurs day for Anderson where she is a teacher in the Anderson high school. 837 Newberry voters went to the polls and gave Governor Burnet R. Maybank 1,175 votes, former gover nor Olin D. Johnston, Spartanburg, ;,’14, and fourth district Congm.s- man Joe R. Bryson, Greenville, 5*8. In the state a total of 124,570 votes were cast. Of this number May- bank received 59,017; Johnston, 40,- 296; Bryson, 25,257. Maybank miss ed nomination on the first ballot by 6,536. The second primary will be held Tuesday, September 16, to nominate a Democratic successor to Publisher Roger C. Peace of Greenville, Gover nor Maybank appointed to fill the seat left vacant by the late Alva Lumpkin who had replaced recently elevated Supreme Court Justice James F. Byrnes. The Democratic nomination, that will pit Maybank and Johnston, is a prerequisite to election in the General Election scheduled for September 30. The new senator is expected to take office around October 15. WHISKEY TAX Newberry was to receive $2,645 as its share in the whiskey tax according to figures released by the State Tax Commission. Counties receive 20 per cent of the taxes collected. This per cent is be ing paid on the old tax of 80c a gal- I Ion. Since the establishment of the 80c .. gallon tax, revenues have been increased several times. The tax on a gallon of wthiskey now comes to $1.98. Richland county, with Columbia as the county seat, was to collect the greatest amount on whiskey sold, with Charleston second. GARLINGTON AND HOPKE ARE HONORED AT BRIDGE Mrs. Ben T. Buzhardt was hostess to a bridge party last Saturday morn ing at the Wallace Home honoring Mrs. Chris Garlington of Panama, and Mrs. W. H. Hopke of Charleston. Roses and zinnias were used thru- out the home as floral decorations. The club prize was awarded Mrs. Price Padgett and Mrs. Steve Griffith was winner of guest prize. Bingo went to Mrs. J. E. Wiseman. Soft drinks and sandwiches were served after cards were laid aside. OCTOBER QUOTA FOR MEN IS LARGE FOR LOCAL BOARDS BREHMER-HUTCHINSON Miss Sarah Ann Brehmer and Rob ert Lee Hutchinson were nlbrried Tuesday, September 9, at 8:30 o’clock at the parsonage of Trinity Metho-. dist church by the bride’s pastor, the Rev. W. C. Brockwell. The couple will make their home with his mother, Mrs. P. B. Hutchin son on Boundary street. Selected for service and training in the U. S. Army from Newberry coun ty during October will be 25 white men ond 10 coloreds. The county’* two Local Boards received! official calls this week for October. Board 58 will send 10 whites on October 17 while Board 59 has been called on to furnish 10 colored on October 6 and 15 whites on October 16. Physical examinations are being held this week and next week to supply enough men to fill the largest call of any one month to come to this county since the inauguration of the Selective Service Act. Local Board No. 59 sends 19 men to Fort Jackson next week for in duction—12 whites to leave Monday and 7 coloreds next Friday. CARPENTER’S EXPLOSION AT ICE PLANT The explosion of an ammonia tank at the plant of the Newberry Ice and Fuel company about two o’clock Mon day morning, was the cause of much speculation among light sleepers of the city. The heavy explosion was heard over a large area and some ventured out at that^arly hour to learn the trouble. The damage to the plant is consid erable and operation has ceased for the present. However, D. W. A. Ne ville, owner, states that he has made arrangements to supply the needs of his customers, pending the installa tion of other machinery. MRS. MARY LEVER DIES AT HER HOME AT LITTLE MOUNTAIN UNDERGOES OPERATION Dr. A. T. Neely, who underwent a major operation in the Newberry County hospital Tuesday morning, is reported to be doing fine. Mrs. Mary R. Lever, 81, widow of T. D. Lever, died Saturday at her home near Little Mountain after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Sun day afternoon at 4 o’clock D3T at Capers chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Gunter, assisted by the Rev. Shel ton Moose. Interment followed in the church cemetery. She is survived by one son, Willy F. White of Little Mountain; one half-brother, Napoleon Derrick of Richland county; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Metts of White Rock and Mrs. John E. Shealy of Chapin; nine grandchildren and four great-grand children. WELLS IS NEW FIRE CHIEF AT AUGUSTA CAMP Henry Burton Wells, Who has been first assistant fire chief at Fort Jackson, has accepted an appoint ment as fire chief of the Triangular Division camp at Augusta, Ga., Capt. Alvin Moore, constructing quartermaster at Augusta, announc ed. Chief Wells was a member of the local fire department for a number of years before he went to Fort Jackson as an instructor and later as first assistant fire chief. Mr. and Mrs. Wells will move to Augusta where they will make their home. Their daughter, Louise, will remain in Newberry with her grand mother, Mrs. H. B. Wells, and attend Newberry college this session.
