Earhardt fell on the ice on Boyce street in front of G. B. Summer’s store late Saturday afternoon and fractured the bones in his left leg above the ankle. The regular business meeting of the Fortnightly club was held at the home of Mrs. R. G. Wallace Tuesday morning with Mrs. Herman Wright, hostess. Mrs. H. M. Bryson was reader, Mrs. John Kinard discussed foreign news, Mrs. W. G. Houseal, domestic news and Miss Mary Burton, state news. The club members enjoyed a three course luncheon at noon. Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Clamp, and son, James, spent Sunday in Salis bury, N. C. with Mr. Clamps broth er, Mr. J. O. Clamp and sister-in- law, Mrs. Clamp, Mrs. L. H. Clamp, sister-in-law of Mr. Clamp of Whit mire accompanied them. Mrs. J. Y. McFall and daughter, Mrs. Toohey, spent the weekend in Newberry. Miss Katherine Adams, who has been connected with her aunt, Miss Mattie Adams, has accepted a posi tion with the Drayton Dress Manu facture company. Miss Adams will take up her new work the fifth of February. Misses Helen Clary and Pauline Summer of Winthrop College spent the weekend with their parents. CALVIN CROZIER CHAPTER MEETS The Calvin Crozier chapter, U. D. Pastre told police the woman ac companied by another couple in an automobile asked directions to a church. Then noticing his rhuematism she started to pray for him and patted his shoulder, hip and knees. Shortly after she left he discovered the mon ey was missing. HONORED SATURDAY The loveliest social event of the week ocurred last Saturday after noon when Mrs. Tom Pope, Sr., en tertained with a tea for her daughter- in-law, Mrs. Tom Pope, Jr., the form er Miss Mary Waties Lumpkin of Columbia. The sun shining on the snow-cov ered grounds of the Newberry Country club made a picturesque setting for the affair. The guests were greeted at the entrance room of the club house by Mrs. R. H. Wright and Mrs. E. B. Purcell, and were invited into the main ballroom where they were re ceived by Mrs. Pope, her guest of honor, and Miss Carolin Thomas of Columbia. The guests were invited into the dining room by Mrs. George John stone, Mrs. J. Y. McFall, Misses Fan nie and Lucy McCaughrin. Helping in the dining room were Mrs. Fitzger ald Rutherford, Miss Elizabeth Mc Caughrin, Mrs. Aubrey Harley, Mrs. J. E. Wiseman, Mrs. R. L. Baker, Mrs. Fred Dominick, Mrs. Frank Mower, Miss Helen Mower, Mrs. A. J. Bowers, Jr., Mrs. L. G. Eskridge, Mrs. Joe Keitt, Mrs. T. L. Hicks, Mrs. R. W. Floyd, Mrs. E. H. In the dining room, those calling were sepvd a chicken salad course with fruit cake and salted nuts. Pour ing coffee were Mrs. J. N. Mc Caughrin and Mrs. John Goggans. In the dining room burned an open fire, throwing a reflection on the silver service at the end of the table. Centering the table was a large bowl of carnations and fern, and on each side were burning white tapers in silver holders. Those assisting the hostess wore afternoon dreses, and the bride wore her wedding dress of white satin.
