Bowers, Sr., is reported improving at the Newberry county hospital where she has been a week She has had influenza. The condition of Mrs. C. A. Dufford patient at the local hospital, was re ported very uncomfortable this morning. Mrs. Dufford was admitted to the hospital last Saturday, because of serious throat trouole. Mrs. William Milam is reported get ting al&ng nicely at the county hos pital. She has had influenza and bronchitis. RECENT ARRIVALS HERE Mr. and Mrs. Roy Propes of Whit mire announce the birth of a daugh ter on Friday, December 1, at the county hospital. GIRL SCOUTS PLANNING CHRISTMAS PARTY Girl Scouts of troop one opened their regular Monday night meeting with the hymn of Scouting and Miss Constance Armfield led in the prayer. The members repeated their promise and allegiance to the flag. A number of small business items were attend ed to and plans for a Christmas par ty were discussed. The Scouts also decided to march in the Christmas pa rade with Santa Claus. An interesting feature of the meet ing was a fashion show. Patricia Cousins furnished the music and Anne Bruner won the prize. She wore a beach outfit. The names of the Scouts were put in a basket and drawn for Christmas gifts. The meeting closed with the singing of several songs. Bettie Jo Counts, Scribe HOW WE DO IT Mr. B. C. Matthews in to renew j his paper and that of his daughter, ] Mrs. Crymds, saying he did not see I how we could produce the paper at $1 per year. It’s just a matter of being willing to expend a lot of effort for a little coin, Mr. Matthews; too, we collect a little fun as we go along and feel, perhaps mistakenly, that we are contributing a bit toward tbe general good of the community. Most editors feel that it is up to them to save the world and while they seem to have done a poor job Of it, we often wonder what kind of country we would have were it not for the | information and influence of the press. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bouknight announce the birth of a son at the county hospital Saturday, December I 2. Mrs. Bouknight is the former Miss j Ellen Bishop. The Bouknights reside on Lyles street. JOLLY STREET ITEMS Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Wicker of Newberry, route 2, are the parents of a son born at the local hospital Mon day, December 4. Mrs. Wicker is the former Miss Muriel Swygert. NEWBERRY ARMORY PROJECT RECEIVES APPROVAL Washington approval has been granted on a $33,728 WPA allotment for a national guard armory in New berry. The approval was communi cated to Senator James F. Byrnes at his office in Spartanburg Tuesday. The project includes construction, painting, waterproofing, installing electrical wiring and plumbing fix tures, landscaping, and incidental ap purtenance. This project will be pub licly-owned with the state of South Carolina as sponsors. Pastor Roof will conduct preaching services at Bachman Chapel Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. The Jolly Street H. D. club will hold its regular meeting Tuesday, De cember 12th at 3 o’clock. Jolly Street P. T. A. Red Cross roll is as follows: Julia Kate Sease, Fran cis Counts, J. C. Boozer, W. B. Boin- est, Sr., Eddie Dunn Richardson, Cy ril Richardson, and Clarence Metts. Friends of Miss Julia Kate Sease, a popular member the school faculty, will be sorry to learn that she has been confined at her home several days with influenza. Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Boinest and family have returned to Denver, N. J., after spending some time in the community. STOP. LOOK AND READ SMYRNA CLUB TO MEET The Smyrna home demonstration club will hold its December meeting Thursday, December 14, instead of Friday . The meeting will be at the home of Mrs. C. J. Matthews begin ning at 2:30. There will be an old-fashioned amateur show presented at the Mollo- hon School Saturday night, December 9th at 7:30 p. m. . , Here are some of the things you may expect. There will be tap-danc ing, singing, fiddling, and many other types of amusement. Some of these performances will be rendered by in dividuals; other, by groups. The persons who will appear on the program from Silverstreet are: Mas- sie Holland, Kathrin Davenport, Eve lyn Neel, Tene Nickels, Myra Daven port, Voneha Brannon, Marjie Saye, Sara P. Smith, Va Longshore, and Edna Baker. The representatives from Oakland are: Byrant Stribble, and his little duet; J. C. Graddick, and Olin Price. The representatives from the city are: Mrs. Way and Deo Pendleton, with their Marionette show. The Carolina Hill Billy Band. The representatives from Newberry Mill are: Mrs. Pauline Geddings, Clyde Fulmer, Fred Fulmer, Lillian Boland, Malium Padgett, and Jennie Belle Ballard. Come out and enjoy a real, good old Major Bowles Amateur hour. Your prescence will be appreciated.
