L. Cok er and company, a merchandising firm, and the Coker Cotton company. For many years Mr. Coker was a director of the Richmond branch of th£ Federal Reserve bank, a post he was tendered upon establishment of the bank in 1914. During the World war he was chairman of the South Carolina coun cil of defense and federal food ad ministrator for the state. He had pre viously served as a member of the national agricultural advisory com mittee, and in 1918 he went to Eu rope as a member of an agricultural commission sent by this government to study conditions abroad. He also served on the South Carolina land settlement commission. In 1901-03, he served one term as mayor of Hartsville, the only time he ever held elective office. He was a DemdersL Mr. Coker was bom November 29, 1870, the son of James Lide Coker and Susan (Stout) Coker. After tak ing preparatory study at Hartsville and Society Hill, he entered the Uni versity of South Carolina, from which he was graduated with an A. B. de gree in 1891. He served as a trustee of the uni versity until & few weeks ago, when ill health caused him to resign. He was a trustee also of Coker college. Honorary degrees bestowed upon him included a doctorate of science from Duke university in 1980, a doc torate of law degree from the Uni versity of North Carolina in 1982, and later the College of Charleston also awarded him an LL. D. in recog nition of the value of his work, the University of South Carolina award ed him the McMaster medal several years ago, and the American Legion gave him its distinguished service ! plaque in 1928. Mr. Coker was twice married. His first wife, Mrs. Jessie Ruth Coker, died in 1913, leaving five children. In August 1916, He married May Roper of Washington, ter of Secretary of Comme Roper. Secretary and Mpe. Roper have already arrived in Hartsville. Surviving are his widow, six daugh ters and two sons. They are Mrs. D. L. Cannon of Raleigh, N. C„ Mias Hannah, Miss Elearnor, Miss Martha, Miss Mary, Miss Carolyn, Robert R. and Samuel Coker, all of Hartsvjlle. At the funeral services Dr. Hairy Neson Snyder, president of Wofford college and Dr. Sylvester Green, president of Coker college, will as sist Dr. Howard M. Reeves. Hymns will be sung by the Coker college Glee club.
