EIGHT FOREST SERVICE SELLS TIMBER IN NEWBERRY COUNTY District Forest Ranger John C. Billingsly advises that the Chapman Lumber Company of Newberry was recently awarded the sale contract for approximately 120,000 board feet of pine timber on National Forest land in the watershed of Long Branch, approximately 3 miles north west of Jalaps, It is expected that cutting on this area will begin in the near future. All trees to be cut will be marked by the Ranger or Assistant Ranger and in keeping with the Forest Service policy of cutting on a sustained yield basis, only about 55 to 60 per cent of the volume of the entire stand will be removed at this time. This will serve as a release and improvement cutting. Over-mature and open grown trees will be cut to release younger and thriftier pines which are now producing higher quality lumber. In the creek bottom many trees are dying because of the build ing up of the land by soils washing in from the surrounding hills. All trees in such areas which apparently will die within the next 16 years will be designated for cutting. The Ranger plans to advertise sev eral such sales as this before the end of the year. B. Ezell, county farm agent, who states that curculio control is not entirely an individual problem but one which concerns the entire community be cause of its movement from one or chard to another. In some of the peach district* a good m»ny wormy peaches are pre sent in the crops. Unlesg these drops are picked up and destroyed, the worms in them will go into the soil, pupate, and produce adult curculio* (snout weevil* resembling the boll weevil.) All home and commercial orchard- ists should immediately pick up the fallen peaches and bury them two feet deep. In the commercial peach areas of the state, this is of utmost importance, as curculio outbreaks in extensive orcharding area* have been very disastrous in years past. Other means of control consists in spraying with arsenate of lead and Jarring the •trees for the adult eurculios at emer gence time. B. Bruner, Jr., Newberry’s golf champion, on Sunday, May 29th, at the Country Club of Newberry. Ac companying Miss Hemphill here will be her brother, Melvin Hemphill, and James B. Urguhardt, Jr., of Forest Lak Country Club of Columbia. Miss Hemphill has recently been selected by the U. S. G. A. authori ties to be a member of the Curtis Cup team to play the best British women golfers in their annual match. This is the highest honor that can be accorded a woman golfer and all of South Carolina is proud of the fact tht Miss Hemphill is a native of this state—Columbia being her home. Melvin Hemphill is a top notch “Pro” in his own right and has been highly successful In teaching his sis ter Katharine, and in bringing her to the golfing heights. Mr. Urquhardt is among the better golfers of Forest Lake Club of Col umbia and is able to give a good ac count of his golfing prowess. The reeent golf finals at the Coun try Club of Newberry proved what “Bcfable” Bruner can do. He will hold up his end in the fastest of com pany He is a finished golfer, a gentleman, and a modest young man of whom Newberry can feel proud of. The directors of the local Club have opened the course on Sunday to the general public. No admission fee will ’le charged. FINAL SERVICES FOR I J, SAMUEL MORRIS Funeral services for J. Samuel Morris, 80, who died at the home of hi* daughter, Mrs. Tiller Hendrix, Saturday afternoon, were held at the Zion church Sunday afternoon with the Rev. T. L. Bryson in charge. Mr. Morris had been ill for several years. He was a retired farmer and a member of Zion Methodist church. He is survived by the following BASEBALL AT JOLLY STREET In a Saluda Valley game Mollohon team will be the guest at Jolly Street Saturday, May 28th. The Mollohon team has strengthened considerably from the beginning and a close battle is expected. Coach Steele of Jolly Street has just announced that B. Busbee a south-paw will pitch and Steele will be on the receiving end. Coach Steele also announced that Kinard will work against Newberry Thursday, June 2nd. This above date was set for the play-off of the game that was tied May 21st. The game will be played at Jolly Street. A large crowd is ex pected. Both games will be called at 4 o'clock.
