Is'sutn for June lb: Luke 9:23, 24, 4b-4)l, 57-62: 11:1-4: 17:20. 21. Memory Selection: Matthew 6:10. Under the perfect teaching of /esus the disciples were led to iearn much about the kingdom. The lesson text includes four pas sages from Luke which teach things the disciples needed to know. And we ourselves should know them. Consider denying oneself. This means more than giving up some luxury. It is the denial and the giving up of a man’s right to do just as he pleases, and his full surrender to the will of Jesus. Jesus called a little child to teach the disciples to be humble. , For through the child Jesus showed that he who humbly serves the least of men “the same is great.” And persever ance is demanded. He who puts bis hand to the plow must not turn back. Choosing Jesus, a ■nan must follow him, even though he must give up the dear- • «st things of earth. Disciples must learn how to pray. In public prayer some seem more conscious of men • than of God. Remember that . God is hearing you. He does not ■eed to be informed at length , about conditions. Be conscious, first, of God’s presence, tell him ! Simply of your needs, and com- • mit your ways unto him. See ' bow the Lord’s Prayer includes ' ally needs. Truly to pray this • prayer fits a man for citizenship m the kingdom. , The kingdom is within you. . Certainly its high principles f must be in your hearts, that its ' rule may be worked out in all • bum an conditions. , ^COOD for KIDDIES up to 12 INSURANCE Fire Insurance And All Other Kinds of Insurance In chiding Life Insurance. The South Carolina State Com mission of Forestry and Clemson College Extension Service have announced that the winner of the South Carolina Five-acre Pulp- wood Thinning Contest is Mr. J. L. Bracknell, Plum Branch, Mc Cormick County, S. C. Mr. Brack- nel has been awarded the $250.00 contest first prize. This, the first annual Five-acre Pulpwood Thinning Contest, was > sponsored by Clemson College Ex tension Service, the SoXith Caro- | lina State Commission of Forestry,; the International Paper Company, The West Virginia Pulp and Paper j Company, the Champion Paper and Fiber Company, and the Union Bag and Paper Company. The prize money was donated by these paper companies, all of which buy pulpwood in South Carolina. The contest was designed to stimulate interest among farmers in cutting pulpwood on their own lands with their own labor during the fall and winter months and in conformity with sound forestry principles. The contest ran from October through February. All contestants owned or lived on farms, marked the trees to be cut on the five-acre plot, and- cut or supervised the cutting of. the trees into puplwood or fuelwood. Rec ords were kept on the number of trees and the volume cut and the number of man hours re quired to complete the cutting. In addition to the state winner, three district winners were de clared by the state judging com mittee. These winners were as fol lows: Piedmont District, . Mr. Charles R. Hammett of Gaffney, Cherokee County; Pee Dee Dis trict, Mr. Francis B. Kinsey of Round O., Colleton County; and Aiken District, Mrs. Kate S. Self of Edgefield, Edgefield County. These winners won over stiff com petition afforded by other partici pants, and were selected with dif ficulty by the state judging com mittee. Honorable mention and county first prizes of $25.00 went to sev enteen (17) county winners as follows: Bamberg County, M. B. Cave of Olar; Berkley County, F. K. Simmons, Eutawville; Claren- Jackson, Horatio; and Williams burg County, Berry I. Williamson, Kingstree. County second prizes of $10.00 were awarded the following: Clarendon County, N. R. Cousar, Sardinia; Greenwood County, J. J. Griffin, Greenwood; and Horry County, Loris F. F. A. Chapter, Loris. The state judging committee was comprised of D. W. Watkins, Director of Clemson Extension Service; Charles H. Flory, State Forester; and Henry Malsberger, of the Southern Pulpwood Associ ation. Plans are underway at the pres ent time for continuation of the contest annually. Outstanding Job The South Carolina State Com mission of Forestry and Clemson College Extension Service take pleasure in announcing the state winner and in awarding the state 1-rii.e of $250.00 in the five acrv thinning contest to J. L. Bracknell of Plum Branch, McCormick County. Mr. Bracknell did an outstand ing job in thinning his twenty- two year cld lob-lolly pine. From the crowded stand he took out crooked, defective, and limby trees, and sold them for pulpwood. This amounted to 19.65 cords From trees too small for pulpwood and from tops he obtained 10 cords of At current prices the value '* the wood cut from the plot was $252.00, or a little over $50.00 per acre. This figure repesents farm mcomr derived from the thinning operations, and can be broken down two ways. First, actual cost of the work was as follows: cutting $90.00; hauling and load ing $87.00; total $177.00. Second, a profit of $75.00 for the five acre plot was realized. From the picture it can be ob served that the stand appears to be lightly cut, aijd this is true. A check of the uncut trees at the time of judging shows that about eighteen cords are left per acre and about six cords were cut. In five years Mr. Bracknell can go back into this plot and cut as much as he has just taken out A nd follow instructions in the Ball Blue Book. Each thinning from now on should continue to take out the low grade trees, so that when th3 plot has reached saw timber size only the best trees will be left for sawtimber. Thus thinning out about one- third the total volume, receiving farm income at the rate of $50.00 per acre, and leaving the best timber to grow, is the nearest thing to eating your cake and having it too.
