What Makes a People Great—He- J
ligion in the Home. ' '•)
Lesson for February 24: Deuteron- j
©my 6:4-12. , ' , ;
Memory Selection: Psalms 145
After an irttroductory.,
mens calling the people to the' . ;
consciousness of their grea 1 ^ heVU u
tage under the true God,Hh^rd ,V!
came, in Deuteronomy 6 the com
mand to love ‘God with all the
heart, soul and might. This was ,
the high interpretation Which-
Jesus himself gave to the Tfeh
Commandments. : . ■ 'O'.’
Parents were then commanded
to teach the things of God/'diU* 1
gently” unto their children, both
in the home, walking abroad, and
• morning and evening. Family
prayer .should mean more to- the
nation now than all the other
things upon which'some of . our
people depend. In pleasant walks
abroad parents can find ample
opportunity to teach children
things about God.
It was alsq commanded that
God’s law should be bound for a
sign upon the hand and as front-
-lets between the eyes.. This
would be a kind of symbol. Be
fore the seat of thought and on
, the hand that carries out the
mandate of the mind should be
worn the law of God. But wear-
- ing signs and frontlets could be
i mechanical and meaningless—
• the chief thing is to have the
| law of God in the heart, to make
- religion the chief thing in the
1 life.
Finally, the people wfere
warned against the insidious dan
gers of prosperity. When they
should possess Canaan, they
should beware of forgetting Grid
who brought them out of Egypt
into a land of- plenty. . t
call fdr their dismissal ahead of
persons with regular Civil Service
status. As reductions in force con
tinue, the proportion of war ser
vice appointees on the federal
payroll will grow smaller and
smaller.
“The return . to regular Civil
Service procedures for the purpose
of filling vacancies, and also for
the purpose of replacing war ser
vice and temporary appointees
who do not become involved in re-
.... ... , .. .
ductions in force and who do not
pass regular civil service examina
tions, is the only way by which
full force and effect can be given
to the provisions of the Veterans
Preference Act. of 1944. > ..
“Outside of making provisions
for the return to regular civil ser
vice procedures, the most impor
tant decision reflected by the or
der is that of creating Uni]ted
States Civil Service Committees of
expert examiners ill . the, .depart
ments and agencies. These : • com
mittees will be under the direc
tion and supervision of- the Civil
Service Commission, and will be u-
tilized for the purpose of conduct
ing examinations in the ^ profes
sional, scientific. and technical
fields which are peculiar to a par
ticular department or . a small
group of departments. In this
manner, the federal government
will, for example, be able to tap
all its resources in the scientific
fields in connection with the re
cruitment of persons for impor
tant posts in federal scientific lab
oratories. - : * ,
Note: The Civil Service Commis
sion will release immediately a
statement on the regulations
which it is prepared to issue in
order to carry out the provisions
of this order.”
