My efforts, accomplishments and activities in the Congress are all matters of public record and open to the public for criticism. As I have not heard of any public criticism of either up to date I am, therefore, glad to assume that my record is approved by the general public. I trust that my official activities may continue to merit the confi dence heretofore reposed. However, we are ex pectin, 1 ! to face eater problems in the near future and they \*tll he of increasing complexity, for we are in the greatest war of all ages. Our Constitu tional fYStem of Government and the institutions es tablished under it are being assailed from without as weH as from within. They are being attacked on the battlefronts as well as the home-front. Our boys are fighting and dying on foreign soil and the uncharted seas to defend them. We must preserve our democracy in their absence. Instead of our trained and experienced men in the armed forces }>eing sent home they are retained to face the ene my on the battlefront. I trust I am not egotistic when I express the hope that the people of this dis trict will follow the same theory and rely upon my traiping and experience when they select a Con gressman to fight the enemy on the home front. Ellis Walker of Camp Ellis, 111., has been here on a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Walker, of near town. Master Jimmie Smith has re turned home, after spending a- while with relatives in Abbeville and Due West. Mr. H. E. Freeland of the Reho- both community was able to return home Monday from the Green wood Hospital, where he under went an appendectomy. Pfc. Paul J. White from Camp Stewart, Ga., is visiting his mother, Mrs. Ruth White, near Bradley. daughter of Mrs. Minie M. Britt and the late Dr. John B. Britt of the Bellvue community. Mrs. Ada C. Kennedy of Salis bury, N. C., is visiting in the home of her brother, Mr. T. W. Cowan, of the Bellvue community, for some time. Mrs. J. B. Smith spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Bryan and children, Delma and Howard, of Greenville. They accompanied her home for the week end. Mr. G. H. McCain is visiting his family Glenn Springs this week. Miss Sallie Woodhurst of Abbe ville is visiting her sister Mrs. J. H. McNeill, and other relatives here. Miss Leona Clinkscales has re turned to the home of Mrs. John Morrah of the Bellvue communi ty, after a visit of several weeks in Anderson and Abbeville coun ties. Miss Carolyn Hitt, student at the Univeristy of South Carolina, Columbia, spent the week end here with her mother, Mrs. Wes- sie S. Hitt. Mrs. B. R. Henderson and Miss Elizabeth Henderson are visiting S-Sgt. and Mrs. James A. Hen derson and son, Jimmie, of Thomasville, Ga., at this time. Mrs. Lillie Langley returned to her home in Plum Branch Mon day, after a visit here to Mrs. J. B. Smith. Mrs. Willie Cobb and children, Jemima and Kate, of Smithfield, Va., have been visiting in and near McCormick during the past week. Hen derson of Thomasville, Ga., an nounce the birth of a fine boy at Finney General Hospital, Thomas ville, on July 1st. He' has been named James Andrew, Jr. Mrs. Henderson is the former Winifred Dunlap of McCormick. S-Sgt. Henderson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Henderson also of Mc Cormick. C. Our country does not have e- nough paper to meet all demands. Great quantities are used to protect overseas shipments of foodstuffs, medical supplies and military equipment for our Armed Forces, and as war needs come first, it is estimated that during the next few months only about half as many paper bags and half as much wrapping paper as we used during the same period last year will be available here at home. Every household and every re tail store in the United States will be affected. Here is the way customers can help stretch the available supply; 1. Take with you, and use and re-use, your own shopping bags, either paper or textile. 2. Accept without wrapping all articles in boxes, glass jars, tin cans or other manufacturer’s packaging that can safely be car ried without additional protec tion. 3. Do not ask for a bag within a bag, extra stuffing, carry-out boxes, etc. 4. Save every bit of unusable waste paper and turn it in to the salvage collection depot of your community. The War Production Board urges retailers to use wrapping materials only for protection, not for appearance, to use the small est amount possible for each cus tomer, to see that edch bag car ries its full load, to re-use wrap ping materials in making an ex change, and to carry on intensive training among his own employ ees to make this conservation pro gram effective within his own store. ONE NEW BAG OR PIECE OF WRAPPING PAPER MUST DO THE WORK WHICH WAS DONE BY THREE OR FOUR BEFORE THIS COUNTRY WENT TO WAR. We can help relieve the paper shortage if each of us discourages every unnecessary use of paper in packaging and wrapping, gets as much use as he possibly can out of each piece of paper, and then saves it for the waste paper col lection.
