J. A. HAMILTON Augusta. Street McCormick, S. C. i 3E Are YOU Helping to Push It Over? S3 Peter and John in Gethsemane. Lesson for April 18: Matthew 26:36-46; John 18:10-12. Golden Text: Matthew 26:41. Judas had already gone into the night to betray his Lord when Jesus and the remainng disciples went from the upper room into the garden of Gethsemane out-: side Jerusalem. Leaving the most of the disciples at the gate, Jesus, j taking Peter, James and John,' went farther intb the garden. But the support he craved from the chosen three was not given. While ; he prayed in agony, as he faced betrayal and death, the three fell asleep. Thrice did Jesus come and awaken them ere he said, “Arise, let us be going.” Perhaps every man comes at some time to a bitter experience in which he finds he is utterly alone. So it was with our Lord in Gethsemane. Even his chosen disciples fell asleep while the soul of the Master was tom with agony. Nothing is told of John except that he slept while Peter and James slept. But Peter, roused from sleep and filled with shame, drew a sword to defend his Lord and with the first swing deprived the high priest’s servant 'of an ear. But Jesus healed the wound- ed man, bade Peter put up his sword, and gave himself to the henchmen of the Sanhedrin and the Roman soldiers. How often have men made mat ters worse by drawing the sword! Let us even now be strengthened in our faith in the gospel of love that, when the terrible arbitra ment of the sword which has been forced upon us has brought de liverance, we may give ourselves anew to the building of the king dom. And let us never, while the cause of our Master is in danger, fall asleep, but, in the words used as the Golden Text, “Watch and pray." ‘ . * Protect Your Valuable DRESS UP for EASTER r /Y.
