This county’s quota for May was $4,100.00, and in the county $12,008.75 worth of bonds were sold, and *in June the quota was $6,500.00, with actual sales run ning to $3,037.50. It was Governor R. M. Jefferies, honorary war savings chairman for the state, and James H. Hammond, of Columbia, who in a joint state ment, praised the excellent record in bond-buying made in the state in May and Juhe. They spoke of it as “a splendid and honorable” record. ‘‘We look with pride on the record of our state in the patri otic purchasing of war bonds in May and June, the first months of the operation of the Treasury Department’s quota system,” the Governor and Mr. Hammond said. “From the beginning,” the statement continued, “our state, as we knew it would, has done its full share in the purchasing of bonds, but when the quota system was adopted, and South Carolina was given specific assignments by the Treasury, they were much larger than the average monthly purchases in this state up to that time. “Yet the state not only met those quotas but exceeded them. For May, the state was assigned a quota of $2,400,000. This was well above the previously monthly average purchases of $1,770,000. But the state pot only made the quota; it exceeded it by 26.3 per cent. “And for June, the Treasury assigned South Carolina a quota of $3,300,000, or an increase of almost a million dollars over May. Once more the people responded in the true South Carolina tradi tion of patriotism, and this quota was over-subscribed by four per cent. “This is a remarkable record, and gives us confidence in. the For Congress Your support and influ ence in behalf of my can didacy for Congress in . the forthcoming Demo cratic primary will be highly appreciated. JOHNSTON future, a future which is certain to bring larger quotas for our state and all others. But every minute, now, our war effort is growing larger, and, seemingly, drawing closer to the point where the full force of it will be felt by the enemy. Here at home, we can make the national task lighter by con tinuing to meet our war bond quotas, help, in advance, make easier the burdens we all know must follow this war. “We wish to extend our thanks to the thousands of citizens who are buying bonds, many of them at a sacrifice, and to the volun tary leaders in the counties who constitute the county and city war savings committees. All have come through splendidly.” In this county the committee members are now working on the July quota, which for this county is $8,800.00, and for the entire state, $4,300,000. This is the largest yet, and a part of the Treasury’s national drive for a billion dollars a month in war bonds.
