Church Sabbath Evening Checking of performance on the farms of more than 1100 McCor mick county farmers who are participating in, the 1940 AAA Farm Program has begun, accord ing to H. M. Freeland, chairman of county AAA committee. Training schools have been held for county performance super visors and reporters, who are re sponsible for checking land use and determining whether farmers have planted within their acreage benefit of it. allotments. Sullivan News The members of the community, especially the parents of the gram mar school children, wish to take this opportunity to mention the Hot Lunch project at Sullivan this year. The children have been greatly benefitted by this service, enabling them to do better work. Mrs. Susie Winn, the efficient ser ver, kept the lunch room, furnish ed by the Home Demonstration Club, very clean. She went every morning, prepared the hot lunch, served it to all the children pres ent, and seldom left the building until the children did. We hope this project will be continued for many years. Marine Corps will be at the post office building, Anderson, S. C. from 1:00 p. m. June 10th, to 1:00 p. m. June 13th., 1940, for the pur pose of examining and accepting young men for enlistment in the Marine Corps. In order to qualify for enlist ment applicants must be single, 18 to 30 years of age, 64 to 74 inches in height, be of good moral char acter and in excellent physical condition. Only those who have satisfactorily completed grammar school are eligible. Men over 25 years of age must have some special technical qualification. Mrs. Inman Griffin and daugh ter, Louise, of Atlanta are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Hunter McKinney. Mt. Carmel people and also the people of Willington, Calhoun Falls and Lowndesville were saddened and grieved to hear of the tragic automobile accident in which Rev. and Mrs. A. L. Doty were critically, if not fatally, in jured. Rev. Mr. Doty has been injured. Rev. Mr. Doty has been pastor of the Presbyterian churches in these towns and both he and Mrs. Doty are very highly esteemed and beloved. Many friends throughout the State will regret to hear of this and we all hone for a speedy recovery. Hester was a visitor in Columbia Tuesday. Miss Sallie T. Cade of Converse College Faculty has returned home for the summer. Mr. D. W. Harling and Miss Monnie Harling were very agree ably surprised Sunday when they realized the Harling family would all be with them for the family reunion. First to arrive were Mr. and Mrs. N. T. Harling, Miss Irene Harling and Mr. and Mrs. John Harling of Greenville. They all worshiped at the A. R. P. Church and on their return to the home found all the family had gathered; among them, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Stone, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes, arid son, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Sizemore and son. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Camp bell and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Whatley, Mr. and Mrs. Adams and son, and daughter, all of Green wood. A delicious and bountiful lunch was served under the trees which was very much enjoyed. The joyous surprise made Mr. Harling and daughter very happy. Municipal Clerks And Treasurers In vited To Conference Municipal clerks sfid treasurers in McCormick County will be in vited to attend the conference for municipal finance officers to be held at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, June 19 and 20, J. N. Caldwell, executive secre tary of the Municipal Association of South Carolina, announced to day. Mr. Caldwell explained that the University Extension Division, W. H. Ward, Director, was cooperating with the Association in this con- ^61*6ri06 Although the conference is being held for the benefit of clerks and treasurers in the cities and towns in South Carolina, other city offi cials may attend the conference, the secretary said. Municipal officers in this county will have the opportunity of hear- ng some of the state’s leading authorities discuss municipal af fairs at this two-day meeting. Among the speakers will be lead ing professors at the University and governmental officials. Visitors attending the confer ence will be guests of the city of Columbia at a banquet to be given the night of the first day’s session. Registration will be at the office of the Municipal Association of South Carolina, 1214 College Street in Columbia, between 10 a. m. and 10:45 a. m. the first day.
