Earn hardt, accompanied by Mrs. Earn hardt, went to Ludenville, Ohio, and drove the ambulance here the past week end. Miss Sara Katherine Price of Wadmalaw Island, Charleston, S. C., is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. T. J. Price. C. E. Wilkie, Plum Branch, McCormick County was awarded $200.00 as first prize in the Middle District 5 Acre Cotton Improvement Contest, conducted by the Extension Service of Clemson College in cooperation with the South Carolina Cotton Manufacturers Association. His yield was 6,535 pounds of lint of 1 3-32 inch staple length. The variety was Coker's 100, Strain 2. Several crops of hairy vetch have been turned under and Mr. Wilkie fertilized each acre with 300 pounds of a 7-10-10 before planting, and 300 pounds around the cotton in early June, then side-dressed with 75 pounds of Arcadian Nitrate of Soda the latter part of June. The rows were 33 inches apart with approximately 57,500 stalks per acre. Mr. Wilkie said the following factors played an important part: land built up with hairy vetch, good seed, balanced and adequate fertilization, firm seed bed, proper cultivation, boll weevil control, and favorable weather. < The mid-week prayer service of the local Baptist Church will, be held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.
