Many, sometimes most of the people of America, often forget or overlook those ideals, some even scoff at their expres sion. But when it comes to a pinch the people of America have never failed to prove again that the spirit of the founding fathers is still dominant in our lives, still motivates our actions. Recent events serve to demon strate the truth that the Ameri can spirit still prevails. It has been the fashion among so-called “intellectuals” in this country, for some years, to preach the doctrine that there is a higher ideal of government than our own, and that Russia, not the United States, has achieved it. But when Russia demonstrated to the world by its pact with Ger many that the Communist ideal was more ruthless and self-seeking than anything we of America have ever dreamed of, many of the “fellow-travelers” in this country began to have their doubts. And when Russia clinched that revela tion that Stalinism is merely another form of autocratic domi nation of the weak by the strong, by undertaking to bring Finland under the yoke by an unprovoked invasion, the scales fell from the eyes of such un-American Ameri cans as had been deluded by the rosy propaganda emanating from Moscow. The magnificent response of the American people to Mr. Hoover’s appeal for help fof Finland is not merely a token of our respect and sympathy for the Finnish people; it is America’s denunciation of Communism and all that the Soviet government stands for. In like manner the spirit of. Americanism has been invoked by President Roosevelt in calling uix>h Catholics, Protestants and Jfews .to bury their Religious differ ences and unite in a solid front of spiritual resistance to the war of the Godless leaders of European nations. ■ :—xx Play At Washington School January 26 The Junior class of the Wash ington Consolidated High School, Parksville, S.
