Marine Corps has been increased from 19000 to 25000 men, new recruit- ng stations have been opened throughout the country. Now young men of this section may apply for enlistment at the Post Office at Augusta, Ga., or the Municipal Auditoriums at Macon, Ga., and Atlanta, Ga. Requirements for enlistment are as follows: 18 to 30 years of age, 64 to 74 inches in height, 1 year of high school or its equivalent, a good physique, and good moral character. Ex-Marines who have been out of the service less than :our years may now reenlist in the grade they held upon their last discharge. Sgt. C. G. Wulk, N. C. O. in charge of the station in room number 308 Post Office building, Augusta, Ga., invites anyone in terested in enlisting in the Marines to write for information; Detroit, Sept. 23. — Chevrolet’s new 1940 models will make their public bow on Oct. 14, W. E. Holler, general sales manager, announced he’-e today. The cars, he said, will be shown simultaneously at the National Automobile Show in Grand Central Palace—where, as volume leader in the industry, Chevrolet again had first choice of space—at the General Motors special showing in the Waldorf- Astoria, at several important local auto shows, and in dealers’ sales rooms throughout the country. In line with the company’s ex perience in recent years, Mr. Hol ler said, an important part of Chevrolet’s announcement adver tising has been scheduled in news papers. Some 6,800 daily and weekly papers from coast to coast are on the schedule, other media being used to supplement and round out this effort. Pre-an nouncement advertising has al ready begun to appear, and space will be increased as the new car introduction date approaches. Formal presentation of its new product, and the selling program for 1940, will be made to Chevro let’s wholesale field organization and the Central Office sales de partment staff at the annual national sales convention sched uled to open here Sept. 28. C., Sept. 25.—The sixteenth annual music contest at Coker college will be held April 2, 1940, according to an announce ment issued recently by Virgil Smith, Director of Music at Coker, who has charge of the event. Continuing the plans of previous years, there will be contests for high school glee clubs and for individual contestants in piano, violin, and voice. The Glee Club contest is in two divisions: schools of 400 or more students competing for the Denny Cup plus a cash award while schools of less than 400 students compete for the Martin Cup plus a cash award. Sept. 5, 1939.—4t. ^ L & South Carolina Crop Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 23.—Ginnings in South Carolina during the semi-monthly period September 1 to September 15 were only slight ly lower in grade than the gin nings during the previous semi monthly period, but the staple length was considerably shorter. Ginnings for the season through September 15 were lower in grade than ginnings for the comparable period last season, as evidenced by a smaller proportion of Strict Middling and higher grades, about 10 per cent this season against about 40 per cent last season. The length of staple for cotton ginned through September 15 was about the same as for cotton ginned during the corresponding period last year, in each of which periods about three-fourths of the cotton was 1 inch and longer Ginnings in South Carolina prior to September 16, according to the Bureau of the Census, were 312,436 bales as compared with 186,316 bales ginned to the same date last season.
