Congress is certain to vote the money.” Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr., at Hartwell last Friday, so in formed the editor of the Herald. In a letter from Congressman Paul Brown we have the following work project activities during the 13 month period ending last March 31. Area Supervisor Mrs. David P. Kerr of Greenwood re ported today. Mrs. Kerr said that compared with 66 young people, including 41 young men and 25 young women, working with the NY A as of Feb ruary 28, 1938, a total of 93, in cluding 28 ycung men and 65 young women, were employed with the NYA as of March 31. She quoted State Director Roger L. Coe of the NYA in Co lumbia as commenting that he was “highly gratified” with the “cooperation of public spirited McCormick county citizens” in the sponsorship of NYA work projects. The purpose of the NYA project cheering message: “lh3 prospect of obtaining final j program is two fold: To give em- approval of the project (Clark’s 1 "loyment, to young people between Wim rinrincr this session of Con- 18 and 25 who are unemployed Hill) durm 0 tms session oi con and Qut of and> at same gress is good.” time, to train them in different Those who have felt that the nursuits so that they will be Clark’s Hill project was in any | qualified to hold down jobs in particular lagging will be hearten- j 0 ^ s b ect)me available, cd by this information coming | The young men are engaged in frem Senator Russell and Con- caroentry, agriculture and the use grescnian Brown, who are con- 1 ban d , and tools ’ among i-Ci-.a-ivo m their statements. work includes domestic work. Shrubs and trees bearing color ful berries will contribute much redolent beauty to the garden un til late in the Fall and sometimes far into the Winter. If used ad vantageously they will supply a magnificient background for many cf our late blooming perennials. The berry bearing plants have a beauty all their own, but the ^hnmis of some of them are so delicate and elusive that onlv those appreciate them who at least take time off and take a few contemplative hours with their plants. There arc many shrubs which bear berries so profusely every year that they produce a brilliant and colorful disolay which ^an be counted on for defi nite effects. If we desire our berry bearing shrubs to fruit well, we must not permit them to suffer from drought. Regular watering in dry seasons is absolutely necessary. These shrubs must be planted in full exposure to the sun in order to rioen the berries. In a shadv location they never acquire their full beauty. In a year of crop failure which from a variety of reasons beyond our influence is sure to occur oc casionally, we must not be im- natient. If we continue to water and tend the plants we will be richly rewarded when they regain their glory another year. It is quite appropriate here to give some different species of berry bearing plants with their description as this has been our first opportunity for describing them. The Barberries belong to the reliable stand-bys which never fail to make a conspicuous display with their hrightlv colored berries. This berry bearing plant is quite a favorite and much appreciated by the English. ..... Euonymus—This shrub with its glistening evergreen leaves and sparkling red berries is a general favorite but sad to say is subject to scale, as many European shrubs are. It should be sprayed lavishly early in Spring with nicotine sul phate to control the disease. Juniperus or Red Cedar pro- McGRATH MOTOR COMPANY, INC McCORMICK, S.
