C. ^ Regular And Reliable Service Ladies And Children Cordially Invited J. B. ORR, Prop. Gives Rules Against Chmdk Bug Losses Clemson, June 5.—Recommenda tions for reducing serious losses caused by the chinch bug in the York, Lancaster, Chester area have resulted from a study from a broad agricultural standpoint by exten sion specialists. “In making this study it was rec ognized that the chinch bug is a dry weather pest and its damage fluctuates greatly”, says W. C. Nettles, extension entomologist. “It was also recognized that the chinch bug tends to become more abun dant in barley and wheat than in oats and to migrate largely on foot from small grain to corn.” The recommendations, announc ed for the benefit of farmers over the state, are as follows: 1. Plant corn and sorghum as far away from small grain and pas tures as practical. Where corn has been planted in close proximity to small grain or pastures, the barrier furrow may be of value. 2. An increase in acreage of winter grains is advisable under all conditions in the Piedmont section. Early-maturing varieties of fall-sown small grain are seldom damaged by the chinch bug even though serious infestations appear in late spring. Small grain is ac ceptable as a substitute for corn in livestock feeding. 3. The best com production prac tices should be especially empha sized in the chinch bug area. 4. Clean cultivated terraces will help eliminate much Johnson grass and also winter hibernating quarters of chinch bugs and other insects. 5. Sorghum and. soybeans may be substituted as resistant crops for silage production. The chinch bug, of course, feeds on sorghum, but If proper cultural methods are ob served, a satisfactory crop should be made. ZXI Fight Garden Pests Clemson, June 5.—Vegetable gar den pests which the good gardener should beware, says A. E. Schillet- ter, extension horticulturist, are the striped cucumber beetle, the tomato fruit worm, and tomato leaf spot and late blight. For the striped cucumber beetle spray with six level teaspoonfuls of lead arsenate in one gallon of water or Bordeaux mixture or dust with one part of calcium arsenate and 20 parts of dusting gypsum or hydrated lime. For the tomato -fruit worm spray with six level teaspoonfuls of lead arsenate in one gallon of water or Bordeaux mixture. If water is used, add two teaspoonfuls of Kayso or six teaspoonfuls of hydrated lime. Dust with one part of calcium ar senate and six parts of hydrated lime. For tomato leaf spot and late blight spray with 4-4-50 Bordeaux mixture to control fungus leaf spots of tomato and late blight of Irish potatoes and tomatoes.
