The highest stage the Savannah river has reached since 1929 was attained on yesterday morning when the guage at the Fifth street bridge showed 31 feet. It was a novel sight for Augustans to see the majestic river “rollin’ along,” moving upon her turgid breast quantities of driftwood which had come from the lowlands of the river proper and i^s tributaries all the way up to the mountains. The allur ing possibilities of such a. plan should make every Augustan con fident of the golden future of this city, a city which should quadruple in the next 25 years as the result of such an improvement. The Chronicle believes that a dam at Clark’s Hill should be built for nav igation purposes only, feeling that the future development of Augusta as an inland port would justify it. Christ, according to Simeon, is “a light to shine upon the Gen tiles.” Here we have that universal touch so characteristic of St. Luke. There are two types of patriot ism. The first is a distinctly national variety which the Jews cultivated with peculiar fervor. A fine expression of it is in the 137th pealm, where the writer cries, “If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her skill.” The second type of love for fatherland is on a larger scale. It is international in character, and is well voiced by Simeon in his considerable amount of back water from the canal which overflowed low places in the city, but the 31 foot river barely wet the “toes” of the levee and a river which would have 25 years ago created much ex citement is now a matter of but passing momentary interest.
