Life Saving, Nursing Care, Promote Health and Safety Five outstanding services make up the health-conservation program of the American Red Cross, according to the annual report just issued in Wash-, ington. These services are first aid and life saving, which together have trained more than a million persons; nursing, with an active enrollment of 3G,133 registered nurses; Public Health Nursing, conducted by 750 nurses in 424 chapters last year; and Home Hygiene, which has taught more than 700,000 men and women simple ways of caring for the sick at home. “The achievements of the Red Cross In public health nursing place it aiu'ong the leaders in this field,” said James L. Fieser, vice chairman in charge of domestic operations. “This service was organized in 1919 to meet needs developed by the World War rid the ravages of the flu epidemic a lich in 1918-1919 took so great a toll cT life. “Since that time Red Cross nursing s rvices have been pioneers in more i an one half of the counties in the 1 nited State. The book “The Book we Teach,” by Weatherspoon, is being taught by the pastor, Dr. D. V. Cason, and 16 members are enrolled. -TXJ- Salary Raise For Teachers Sought COLUMBIA, Nov. 17.—The state budget commission has been ask ed to recommend an increase in the department of education’s 1935-36 appropriations sufficient to allow salary increases for South Carolina teachers next year. James H. Hope, state superin tendent of education, in present ing a request for $3,124,081 as com pared with a 1934-35 appropriation of $2,438,000, said an increase *of‘ from $66 to $75 a month in state aid for white teachers and a 10 per cent increase for negro teachers; was contemplated. The salary ad vance, he estimated, would aggre gate approximately $488,000. In addition to the increase for teachers over the six months period' during which state aid is applied, Hope estimated that on the basis of enrollment increases this year, ap proximately 114 additional teachers would be needed. Beer, Wine Tax Grows Rapidly COLUMBIA, Nov. 17.—The state tax commission was preparing yes terday to allocate to the state treasury department, municipal and to counties $102,027 in beer and wine taxes collected during the quarter of the year July through September, W. G. Query, chairman, said. The total collected repre sented an increase of about 34 per cent over the same period of 1933, when $75,339 were collected and al located. Of the total being apportioned this week, $42,300 goes to the state treasury, $42,300 to the counties, and $17,426 to the cities. Charleston county receives by far the largest sum going to any county, $7,050, and of this $2,809 was allocated to the ‘‘City by the Sea.” Due West ran true to precedent, again drawing nine cents in taxes from the sale of “light wines and beers.” This represents the town’s portion of income from taxes on nearly one whole case of beer.
