BIG MONEY IN ALFALFA The Agricultural Society of South Carolina Has Made Arrangements for a Supply of New Crop Seed for Distribution. News and Courier. The following extracts taken froin a report on alfalfa. made at a ineet ing of a farmers' institute in Texas, this month, by Mr. R. E' Smith, of Sherman, Texas, will add to the information wanted at this time by the farmers of this State. who in tend planting it on a small scale this fall. Mr. Smith, in reply to questions, said: ''If you were to go to my iarm1 to. day you would find 8;> acres of solid alfalfa, and twenty men preparing the land for 2r.j acres more, to be planted this fall if I cain get the seasons. Whiere fall plantinug is intended, it is wvell to select laud on which a crop of cow peas has been growinig dutrinig the stunmuer, as this has the effect of cleaniung the groundl( and addinug very much to its fertility. Th'lis laud sholdl( be ploughted deep several weeks b)efore p)lantinlg, and( if Possible the p)lough1 should beC followed b)y a subsoil plough to loosen up the undi(er ground, while the surface should b)e harrowed1 and cross-harrowed until it is perfectly smooth and friable. In preparing the land a heavy a'pplication of stable manure or of fertilizers should be made. Mr. C. W. Howard, who was one of the best authorities on grasses in the South. remmended,i .o )Otldl(s of fertilizer to the acre for the first year; others advise 400 to 5oo FOtnds of cottoll seed ieal, but il every case the lafid itist be well enriched and thbrouglrly prepared to bm sure of success. The seed should be sown in drills, 15 inlches -part, so that it may be kept clean >A weeds and grass during the first year. Any titue during September Md October is suitable for the fall ,owi'ng; but as the fresh seed is )nly now coming in, it is safer to iow in October ivith it that ill -;eptemuber with the seed of last ea r.
