THE WHEAT HARVEST. li 1902 the five million farmers in the United States earned an aggregate net profit. of two !Allions of dollars. The gross earnings of the farms amounted to $5,2t0,000.000, of whicb $400,000,000 was paid out to the workers in the field. No other industiv mty be compared for an instant with i'ht of farming- -either i inimportance or sheer ma nitude. Last year t00,000,o.0 busliels of wheat were irodtueed in the United States - loughI to give about two bushels to every family in the entire world. Since then, six 1nillion acres of new landhave been put. under cultivat on, and ce now producing their first crop. What will be the result of this vastly increased aereage? At first thought. the answer occurs to one that the price will decline. and that the farmers will be less prosper ouis. A closer view of the situation shows that whilu the price of wheat may not range along such high levels as during the past two years there is small probability of its declining to such a1 figurti as to wipe out the increase in the gro.ss returns from the enllarged acreage'. ailr.ors of Ihad weather do lot dest roy the widely I clvalent notion that the next wh 'at erop will be the largest yet known.
