The district judge a-,ked the gov ernor for troops to accompany the negroes here from the jail at Hons- 1 ton where they were safe. At the request of a large number of citi zens of H.mpstead who signed a written promise to aid the aothorities in preventing any mob law it is said Judge Thompson countermanded his request and the troops did not ascompany the negroes. Barton was first tried. He plead guilty to criminal assault and then to ibe mnrder 4f Mrs. Susau Lewi?, aged 63, Sunday, October 12. The mob was dispersed and the trial proceeded, tba State putting throrgb its testin.ouy hurriedly in corroboration of thA plea of guilty. Both juries assessd the doath pen alty. The officers of the court sat about the room awaiting the coming of troops when there was a sudden movement on the part of several men in the room. The sheriff was over powered and Wesley was taken pos session of by the mob and hurried away. Another portion of the mob at tacked the jail and Barton was sur rendered to them withoat a struggle. The two prisoners were hustled to the public square and thbere executed by barrging. Neither of them had been sen tenced and District Judge Thomp son had positively refused to permit them to waive the thirty days of grace allowed them by law. It was the general desire that they (lie quickly. They hung Tuesday night to the arm of a telephone pole, where only last month a negro murderer had been strung up by a mob. Sheriff Lipscomb was badly hurt about the back by the rough treat ment of the mob. Pariog the first rush a shot was accidentally tired and Sheriff Sparks of. Lee county was wounded.in thbe stomach, though not seriously hurt. The Governor was informed of the lynching but as yet has had nothing to say. STEPPED OFF FLYING TRAIN. [The State.j] A very unusual railway accident occuirred a half mile west of Pelzer station Thursday night. It appears that wheni nearing that point the porter of train No. 16, South bound, came through the first clas~s coacb, as is the custom anid called out the station when Miss Minnie Hollings wortb. a young lady passenger, de liberately arose from her sent, walked to the platform of the coach and stepped off to the ground while the train was dashing along at the rate of perhaps 30 wiles an hour. It so happened thait one of the train crew saw the lady as sheC stepped off and Conductor Beattie wats immediately I notilied, who backed thbe train in search of the lady, fully expecting to find her lifeless body by the roadside,' but the strangest part of the story is that she picked herr up after the fall and walked s-ome distance to her home in Pelzer, with only a few slight bruises about her person. The strange conduet on the part! of this lady has not y et been ex plained, whether she was asleep or did not know the train was in motion is not known.
