'H The retirement of George R. Koester from the lucrative office of collector of internal revenue for the district of South Carolina owing to the failure of the senate to confirm his nomination is an impressive lesson in the -far reach ing results of acts not thought especial ly harmful or wrong at the time of their commission. Nobody thought any thing of Geo. Koester's part in the Gas ton lynching at the time it occurred, but ten years later it rises up to in fluence the republican majority in the United States senate and deprives Koester of about the best federal office in the State. We do not admire Koes ter's politics, but it looks like a pretty rough deal for him to get fired out of a good office, the duties of which he is said to have been discharging in a eapable manner, on account of an act which public sentiment in this State has never blamed him for and does not - blame him for now.-Spartanburg Jour nal. We agree with the Journal. The mar who opposed Koester's confirmation has little ground upon which to base a fighi if it was made for the reason stated. But politics is a queer sort of thing anc the man who pretends to be your frienc today may fight you to the death to .., morrow. The following is from the Sumtei Herald and is evidence of how Col. Johnstone is making headway in his race for the Senate: The first speaker-and by odds thf best-was Cot George Johnstone, oi Newberry, and of all the candidates hE probably made most votes. Colone Johnstone is an orator who goes to the bottom of things. He is clear, logica and el uent. Such a man in the Sen ate wo compel the admiration of al who heard him. He discussed tarifl reform, the trusts, and the Phillipin( question ably and instructively. The county campaign will open to morrow at Pomaria. Misses Georgia Schumpert, Jessi< Moseley and Lillie Mae Russel, of Pros perity, are visiting Miss Annie Mae Be denbaugh. Our dear old pastor was sick and un able to preach for us yesterday. A re quest was received from him that Mr T. B. Epting, a young theological stu dent and member of his church should supply his pulpit, which he did. Some of the sick in our commumit' have improved, others are no better. Mrs. Margaret Epting will return t< her home in Newberry tomorrow, hay 6 ing spent a few weeks in .the lower part of the county with her daughte and grandchildren. In my last letter I said Mrs. Epting was in her 84th year, but instead she is in her 85th year, and has seen hei fifth generation. We had a very hard storm on last Monday evening which did much dam age to crops, blowing down a tree on Mr. L. D. Morris' smoke house and smashing it into pieces. We had the pleasure of attending commnion services at Mt. Olivet on last Sunday and hearing an interesting ser mon delivered by Rev. P. H. E. Der rick. A good many people are expected to be present at Children's Day services next Saturday at Bethel. Crops in this section are looking very well to the dry weather; if wve could get a good rain we think a good crop would be gathered.
