The county summer school entered upon its second week yesterday, and I am glad to note that the enrollment has now reached thirty-five. Under the ex cellent supervision of Professors Wal lace and Derrick the school is progress-1 ing finely, and the teachers are being greatly benefited. I wish it could have been convenient for every teacher in the county to at-! tend the school here this year, for I am sure they could not have spent a month more pleasantly and profitably. As I have already said, the instruc tors are doing excellent work, and if there are any other teachers who ex pect to attend and get the benefit of a good summer school course, we should be pleased to enroll them right away, as after this week the school will be half over. I shall say for the benefit of some of the teachers that at the close of the summer school work the teacher-pupils will be given an opportunity to stand an examination for certificates from' questions prepared by the summer school instructors. Respectfully, E Eug. S. Werts. B 48BHALL. The commissioners of public works held a meeting Friday afternoon to dis cuss the sewerage situation ar.d to look into the matter of the advisability of asking council for an additional appro priation large enough to sewer the whole city. The present system as cor. templated will include only five miles of pipe, and it is estimated that an ad ditional four miles will be necessary. Mr. R. H. Welch is one of those whom the present system will not reach and he was present Friday and made an argument for its extension. Mr. Beddoes, the city engirteer, was called upon for a report as to the ex act cost of the present system, to be presented at a meeting called for Thursday. When this report has been received the commissioners will be able to take some definite action. NO VERDICT YET. The Case of J. Butler KInsrd Still a Mys te'y to the C'ron -r- Wait in; on Evidene' . The coroner has not yet reached a verdict in the case of J. Butler Kinard, who was burned to death in his house on Mr. H. H. Evans' place, in this county, on the 21st of June. The coro ner held an inquest over the body on that day, but owing to the meagre character of the testimony, and the grave suspicions which were entertain ed that Kinard had been robbed and murdered, adjourned to meet a week later. On Saturday at Mr. J. Vv. Der rick's place the inquest was continued. A good many negroes living around the scene of the fire were examined, and some conflicting tales were told. But the coroner for the second time did not reach a verdict, believing that by in vestigation the truth could be brought to light. The third inquest will be held in the office of Magistrate J. H. Chap pell on Saturday, July 12th. Magistrate Chappell has been requested by the coroner to conduct the investigation, and will do so. Thrown from a Train. Caldwell Ruff, a young man from the lower part of the county, and who now has a position with the Carolina Manu facturing Company, was thrown from, the C., N. and L. train as it was pull ing out from the depot on Sunday, he-' ing knocked unconscious and pretty severely bruised. He had boarded the train as it stopped, intending to get off before it started, but was a little late n doing so. In stepping off he stepped, straight in front of him, and of course, was violently thrown to the ground, -his face striking the rocks. He was car-! ried into the ticket office and soon re gained consciousness. The accident did not prove to be serious, as it might ave been. Need More Help. Although Newberry's fire fighters did not bring back any of the prizes from he Sumter tournament, they made many friends while in the Game Cock City. The following is from the Sum er Herald. Newberry has a team of which she is justly proud. The men are gentle men throughout and comported them selves as such during the entire time: they were here. They made many friends, and their "hard luck" was de plored by many of the fair sex who ould not see "how it happened" in 24' seconds. Don't Fall to Try This.
