" !ThJJ11 rai and rW A SPLENDID GlFT. TWEN' Y-FIVE THOUSAND DOMAKS GiVEN BY Ni.W YORKER To Thornwell Orphanage I hrough a Frie.nc in Vlrginia-Judge Phlegar of Ros nose Has for Yearw Been Keep ing the Clinton Home for Children. [The State.] Roanoke, Va., June 24 -For over 20 years, Judge A. A. Phlegar, for merly of the State supreme court and the Superintendent of the Presbyte rian Sunday school at Christiansburg, Va., has been working no an annual Christmas ofi-riag to the Thornwell orphanage, located at Clinton, S. C. Last Christmas the amount contrib uted by the school was over $600. Besides this regular annual offering, the judge always has an eye to its welfare and recently an elder of the Radford, Va., Presbyterian church paid $1,000 for a perpetual scholar. ship which provides annually the whole cost of an orphan. Judge Phlegar today announced that a gentleman of New York, with whom he had business relations and to whom he had explained the work ing of the orphanage, had sent him a check for $25,000 to be turned over to the Thornwell orphanage. While Judge Phlegar withholds the name of the New Yorker referred to, it is believed here that he is H. C. McHarg, who has been associated with Judge Phlegar as a joint re ceiver of the Virginia Coal and Iron company. Cost of Boer War. The Cobden Club puts the cost of the Boer war at over a billion and it thinks it would have been better to spend the money in enlarging the endowment of Oxford and Cam bridge. There can be no doubt ol Sthis-that if the billion was spent for a lees object than saving the em pire from destruction it was wasted. Nothing less than the preservation of the national domain-including in that term the aggregation of Eng land, Australia, South Africa, India and Canada-would be motive enough for such an outlay. It is, however, a matter of dispute whether yielding to the Transvaal and the consequent loss of South AfricE meant necessarily the dissolution ol the empire. It is questioned whether a conflict sooner of later with t bf Transvaal was really inevitable, a represented, or was unnecesarily brought about by the aggressiveness of Mr. Cbamberlain. The latter con tends that Mr. Kruger was the ag gressor and would not keep the peac. while Mr. Kruger maintains the op posite. The truth possibly lies be tween the extreme contentions. Boti statesmen were opinionative and un compromising. The outsider ii hardly in a position to decide whici was most at fault. What is clear ii that somebody blundered dreadfully Ambition has rarely cost the victimi so much in blood and treasure.-Bai timore Sun. B. B. EVA N8 CiSE. Postponed Untii the Nextr Term of the Sea slons Court for Richland. [News and Courier.] Columbia, June 23.-Special The Court of General Sessions con vened to-day, Judge Aldrich presid ing. The matter of chief interes to the publie was the postponemenl of the case of Major Barnard B Evans, charged with the murder o Capt. Griffin. The postponemen was granted on the showing of Mr Andrew Crawford, one of the attor neys for Evans, that t wo very mate rial witnesses were absent from th< State, although diligent effort ha' been made to obtain their presence He promised that they would be her, next time. It was not, of course mentioned, as a ground for contin * usnee, but it is a fact that two of Mr Evans' attorneys are now in the cam paign running for United States Sen ator-John Gary Evans and Georg4 Johnstone. Mr. N. G. Evans, an other attorney, is sick, and Major WV T. Gary, of Augusta, Ga., has beer elected Superior Court Judge, the duties of which may prevent bis ap pearance at Court. Another case which has been hanging over foi several terms will be tried this time. It is that of W. Bb Smith, charged with murder. He is a white man, who killed Howard Allen in a gam bling game.
