TQRN*uo eTUOK RIUHLANiD. Three Perie Killed Near 6astover-Ail Negro Uhildren. [The State, 27th.] The der tructive tornado that struck the mill village at Union Surday afternoon, killing and wounding several people, did not spend all its force in Union county. The fall of the temperature here of 24 degrees in five minutes indicated that Colum bia was close in the path of the weird monster, but it was not known until yesterday that it came so near. Yesterday morning news reached the city that it had struck the lower pnr. tion of this county with great severi ty and had killed at least three per sons. The tornado struck the coun try arouud Eastover and leveled the house of a negro named Washington Haynes on a hill on the Weston plan tation. In the collapse of the house three of Haynes' children were killed outright, and a number of persons who were in the house were injured. Whether others at points beyond fell victims or not could not be ascer tained here yesterday. It is said that the tornado not only blew down houses, fences and trees, but completely ruined the young crops around Eastover, corn being cut off at the ground. The names of the three Haynes children who were killed could not be ascertained yesterday. THREE NEGRo OHILDREN KILLED IN SUN DAY'S SToRM. Congaree, May 26.-News of the death of three children, aged 14, 16, 18 respectively, of Wash Hayne, a respectable colored man living on the estate of the late Dr. William Weston, has just been received here. The houEe of Hay ne is situated four miles below here and was in the tail end of t he tornado which passed here yesterday af erno in. The inmates of the house were all inside when the house was lifted from the eart h and the three persons were burled to death against flying timbers. Three killed and one fatally wounded is the result of the casualty. CiOs-EM (1F HONOK. Latin Insciptton t.t le Puzzling Some Penp' c, [Coluobia Record, 26t h] The crosses of honor which the Daughters of the Confederacy have given to veterans has a little Lat. in inscription on one side that is puzzling a great many, people. The inscription is "Duo vinces." The Anderson Mail says: Every one has seen the crosses of honor that were recently given them by the Daughters of the Con federacy to the Confederate vetraaa of the county. Thre cross are very pretty, though modest in design, and are gr.Aatly appreciated by' tbhe heroes who have rece'iv,.d them. Oun one side is the L otina inscrnip ti, "Deo vinices " WVhsn Col J. C. Sr rilinig, of Pe-dieton, got his cross a few days ago he didn't know what on earth that inscription mneant, so he wvent to a Latin scholar in the city anid asked for an English tranrslationr. Thelr gent leman told him it merant "God bemrg the judge." Co'l. Stribling was-n't altoget her saith-fied anid aisked anot her man, who told him it meant, "God avenget h." Then1~ Col. Stribling hunted an other mfian and without lelling him what the other hard naid, askedl what was the English for "Deo vinces." This man told him it meant "God vindicates." By this time Col. Stribling was hopelessly mystified. He went to Clemson college a few days later and made the rounds of the professors there. He propounded the question to each one and1 from each got a new answer. He wrote the answers down on a piece of paper and yesterday turned them over to the Daily Mail. Here they are: "By God we conquer." "God be ing my judge." "God is our refuge." "God vindicates." "Approved by God." "God is with us." "Thou haet been conquered by God." Col. Stribling has given up in de. spair. He is very proud of his cross of honor, but it has an inscription the meaning of which be doesn't know and can't find out.. He thinks it . means something nice, but he would like to be certain about it. He says that perhaps the ladies who gave the crose can tell what they meant by "Deo Vinces." If so, he would like to hear from them. At'Aif A aUt O sY J tti5WltAt. 1 Aaother Pleee of saperb-Ajerprise o the I Part of the Oeet-AtlntA Dfly-Wll Appear June 1. The Atlanta Journal has announ oed its purpose to begin on June 1 the publication of a Sunday morn. ing edition. This announcement car ries with it the assurance that The Sunday Journal -will be one of the most complete, comprehensive and attractive papers published in the entire country-for it is well known that w'hatever this great southern newspaper ndertakes it executes perfectly. The Journal argues that-the pub. lication of its Sunday morning edi. tion is made neocessary by the grow. tug demand for The Journal on. seven days of the week instead of six-in other words, a demand for a newspaper that gives all the news all the time. The Journal has gone about the preparation of its Sunday edition with the same spirit of enterprise and liberality of expenditure that has made The Daily Journal the most popular and universally read newspaper in the south. It has not only installed a new $42,000 press, but has at enormous expense sup. plemented its already magnificent news service (that of the Associated Press, admittedly the best on earth) with the special cable service of the New York Herald, the most perfect foreign news service in existence, to gether with all of the best special Sunday features of The Herald, the same to appear simultaneously in that paper and The Sunday Journal. In addition to this its own corps of special writers will embrace some of the best kt,own names in the coun try; among them George Ade Peter, Fieley Dunne, Bishop Candler, Sam P. Jones, Mrs. Felton, Rev. George G. Smith, the historian, and num erotic others. Its social news and religious depart ments will be Apecial features, whils its colored comic sup plement will be the equal of any, and the first ever issued by a Georgia newspaper. The Sunday Journal will be sent to regular subscribers of the daily at 12 cents per week-- or for the small additional cost of 2 cents per week. Or it will be served by newsboys at 5 cents per copy. It goes without saying that this jew piece of enterprise on the part of The Journal, meaning as it does, greatly increased service at a mini mum of inereaMed cost, will largely increase the circulation and useful ness of that great newspaper.
