I have thought for some time ol writing an article on idle words and wasted time. This is a subject tha deserves our consideration and delib erate thoughts. The Word of Go( teaches us that not only every idli word, but also every idle and wicke< thought is mprked down agaiDst us and unless we repent we shall b brought to account for the same. Wi are not held accountable for our mis fortunes. I mean things we can' help, but all those idle, cranky, non senical words, thoughts and action that are so often practiced among s many people of today is not only waste of time, but sinful as well a odious in the sight of God. If we could only take a view of th precious hours of our lives that ha been wasted in this way it woul4 certainly be a rebuke to us. A gres deal of idle words are spoken an< hours of precious time wasted by th way of argument. Some people de light in argument. They often dif fer with you if they know you ar right, simpry for the sake of argu ment. They conclude that its streak of smartness to differ wit others, and will talk any kind c talk in order to be counted smart. say to all those who are trying t devote their time to usefulness t shun the company of such people, c at least always avoid an argumet with them. What does it differ i they don't agree with what you sa3 you never can convince a person this nature that they are wrong, an its a perfect waste of time to try t instruct them. The best way to coi vinee the world that you are rig] is simply to do right. Actions alwa3 speak louder than words. So neve mind freting yourself trying to sho something notable or noble. Go - -* sees every act of our lives, and hei marking them down closer than mai and if anything you do is worthy < note or notice the world will soc find is~ out; so let us press forward i the mark of our high calling, and a ways remember that time is too pr cious to squander. Let's figure a little on wasted timi Suppose you only spend one hour day in what we usually call jostinj having fun, if you please to sa: cracking jokes,, telling big storie arguing, and many other ways whic are usually practiced among -1 church people. This seems like very small matter, and we se thedes no harm ini having a litt fun, and there is no liarm in haviE fun and its not a waste of time1 have fun if we only will keep id words out. But let's sum up this wasted hot a day and see what it amount There are 365 days in a year, whiic makes 365 hours, which means J days and five hours a year. No' just at this small estimate of waste tune every 24 years you have simp1 thrown away one, not only in idl4 ness, but also in wickedness. But < the other hand, if we had just spei this one hour a day in the rigbt kit of study, bringing to our mind som, thing noble and good, constantly at gradually growing in grace and the true knowledge of what makes -man or woman what they ought i be. Oh! what a comtort and blessit it itould be to you at your last honi to look back over a life that ha been so well spent, and to know thi you have not wasted God's timei idleness. I mean morally better, and this should be an encouraging thought to every living soul that has a true love for God and his country. There's no doubt but a few may deny this and say that the people are not growing morally better. Bat, thank God, its true. I can see it right under my own observation, and can also hear from people who have resolved to live better lives from all parts of the county and towns. I know numbers of men and women of considerable age who have, and are still forming bet ter habits; and our young girls, and 3 especially our young boys deserve a ) great deal more praise than they get, 1 and I am going to say right now we 3 have the noblest set of boys and young men in my own immediate D section that I have ever known. Now 3 boys, this is saying a good deal for I you, and for the sake of God, don't t betray my confideuce. No, I don't I belive you will be among these boys. I nc)ver see or hear -any profanity, drunkenness and playing cards, and n:any other sinful vices that I could mention practiced among them, and I should further say that very seldom you can meet one who 3 uses tobacco in any shape or form. f Now this is true, and I say it with a I grateful heart, and it means some D thing and something good, not only for these boys, but for the upbuilding r of God's kingdom on earth. So let t tbese words stimulate you, my noble f boys, and make you more zealous in ; your efforts for good, and take this I for a text to live by. Duty is yours, 3 and events belong to God. So waste > not your precious hours in idle talk. Whatever time you can steal from t company and from the study of the s world, I say company, for a knowl r edge of life is best learned in com~ r pany, employ it in serious reading. d Take up some reliable hook and con: tinue the reading of it until you , have gone through it. Never burden f your mind with more than one thing i at a time. A little well learned is >o worth volumes of half study. One of the most important steps in life is - to keep good company; and nothing forms a young man so much as being I used to keeping good respectable com pany where constant regard and at ,tention are necessary. It is true this ; is at first a disagreeable restraint, ibut it soon grows habitual, and con. Ssequently easy, and you are amp!o s paid for it by the improvement thal a you make and the credit that it give y you. But I will have to stop thi~ e subject, as I fear that I have already g made it too long, and possibly migh o become wearisome instead of inter e esting. In conclusion to this; "leal friends, I want to say that I am nol r writing this for mere past time, oi .simply to fill up the paper. I wani you to cut it out and occasionally 5 reread it, and ponder it in youl ,' earts, and mark it down from nov on, not to waste so much of our val uable time in idle talk.
