There are many great exbibits at the South Carolina loterstate and West Indian Exposition, there are many marvelous things. There are sights, sounds and sensations to suit every shade of human taste; pro found things for the profound, artis tic things for the artistic, sentimental things for the sentimental and mor als aplenty for the moralists. But if one is looking simply for a good time, for pureImadulterated fun, it can be had in the Beautiful Orient and in big bunches. At a step one finds one's self in the midst of a maze of narrow, wind ing streets flanked with quaint look ing market stalls, stately mosques, solemn temples and graceful mina rets, all clothed in the gorgeous eol ors so dear to the Eastern heart. On every side arises a babel of strange sounds, the - din of drums, the falsetto squeak of queer reed in - struments, the droning chant of mos lem prayers, the hoarse shouts of camel driws, the shrill cries of hawk e vending their wares, the grunt - ing of camels, the braying of diminu tive donkeys, the trumpeting of ele phants; a medley of wild, weird mu sia and the jargon of many tongues. For here is a motley and polyglot throng of many peoples and of my riad languages. The turbaned Turk strides abreast of the skirted Greek; the white shrouded Algerian rubs el bows with the swarthy sheik from the plains of Araby; the natty and bejeweled Persian doffs his fez to the ebony skinned belle of Ethiopta, while the stranger is jtstled by a motley crew of Armenians, Alba nians, Kurds, -Roumanians, Servians, Bulgarians, Nubians, Cingalese, Arabians, Soudanee, Aoyesinians and a host of others, all dressed in their national costumes and puren ing their accastomed occupations with all the noise and confusion of the land of Allah, &Iahomet and Bud dah.- A hustling, bustling, jostling throng arrayed in all the pictures - que splendor of the Far East. * Muleteers and musicians, camel drivers and contortionists, swords men and singing girls, dancers and dervishes, tumblers and tradesmen, jugglers and janizares, houris and hawkers, acrobats and artizans, a shouting, singing, rollicking and ~'ood natured crowd as one may wish toee. K And how the sight-seeing and fun loving American crowds enjoy it! Here indeed is the home of bilarity and the street of folly.
