Some cf Senator Mcl;aurin's friends assert with great positiveness that lie has assurance from President Roosevelt that the present adiniistration is disposed to follow the course mnarked out by McKin ley in dealing with political affairs in South Carolina In support of this con tention a new collector of internal reve nue for the state of South Carolina is to be appoiited within a few days whose principal sponsor is Senator McLaurin. It is anthoritively stated that Loomis ltlaloik, a promintent bustniss inn of I,aureus, has been selected to succeed the late E. A. Webster, who dietI the same day President McKinley was shot. Webster was the Republican boss of South Carolina and was a member of the Republican National Committee. Since his death the Republican machine in the State has been striving to have Deputy Collector Merril appointed to fill tli vacancy, but it appears that t he influence of Senator Mci,aurin and the commtercial interest back of Mr. Blalock, outweighed that of the regular Republican organiza tiotn in the Palmetto state.
