If it should happen to rain the day before the tournament it will not be the team that can run the fastest but the one that can slide best. A good barbecue in Newberry on the 5th and oth of June, ,ho days of the firemen's tournament would be a paying thing. Who will give the 'cue? There was no preaching at Thomp son Street church on Sunday. The pastor, Rev. E. P. McClintock preached at Clinton on Saturday and Sunday. The play at the opera house as pre scuted by the Petle Opera Company was an excellent one. The crowd wai small but they gave a full program i'nd every part wr4 well acted. Professors S. J. The old barn on the Dr. Thompson lot on Boundary street, was blown down yesterday by the winds. It would be a grand time for Newberry If some other old buildings would do likewise. We may not be in order, but however venture the suggestion that the school exercises be held a week earlier' or a week later', as.the two events-the fire men's tournament and the closing ex ercises-will cOnlict. It is true the tournament will be held on the 5th and 6th and ahoe school exercises are to be held on the 7th, but It should be re membered that the tournament is ;,olng to be a "gala affair" for Newberry; thousands of people will be here; visi tors from all parts of the State; already no less than a dozen companies have entered, and there are others to fel low. How many children in the city will want to attend school on those days-that is the days of the tourna.. ment? It will be enjoyment for them to witness the parade, races, etc. Then there will be something to do esch night and every body will be tired and worn out by the night of the 7th. Of course some will say that the school is of iroro importance than the fi:-emen's tournament, against which argament we shall not contend. But Newberry does not have such occaa!oas often, and every thing should give way to) the fire laddles. We speak now, ho. ever, for the children, What do the trus tees and the management of the school say? Several picnic parties went out from Newber-y Satur'day but the day ended very disastrously for one of taoe ple:. sure seekers. A s two wagons contalo lng the party was returning from Spearman's Spring where they had en joyedl a very p)leasant day, the boys began throwing grieen peaches, when one of them struck Miss Lois Goggans in the eye and intileted a very painful bruise and upon c::arnination it isifear 0(d that it wWl be v'ery ser'.ous, perihaps resulting in the loss of an eye. WVe hope however that the result will not, be as bad as flest thought and that Miss Lois willl eoon be herself again. Roys should be more careful and especially when in t,he company of young ladies.
