Tle pr.o)ects are now bright for the building of a road from Blacksburg, S. C. via Nowbcery and Saluda to John stonl in Ildgefield County. Mr. W.11. Wells, chief engineer of the Southern, went over the route last. weck, which makes about the third time (hat the Southern has sent its en ginecers over this line to advise as to the praticbitity of building the road. Mr. Wells stopped over in Newberry and spent the night with Dr. IL. C. Carlisle, of the Counlity. It is said that lhe has already recoinoiided tle building of the road aid ti:,t work will be con mlenced wit1hil ;xty days. If the road is built, it will shorten the distance from inort h to Ilorida by about sixty miles, and t his is a great gain in this day of rapid transit and sharp Competition for the patronage of the northern tourb:t+. The road bed has been graded for a narrow gauge from here to Augusta for some time. It is not known yet whether the route will be direct from Let-o to Saluda or via Silver Street. 'ITh direct line would save about two or three miles of road bed. The people of Midida are very entbu siastic over the pospect and are urging tho building (.f it. Our people shuld sdb to it that it is not built around us, as was tho case some years rgo, but we must get it through Newberry by all means. Mr. James Y. Culbreath, who is largely interested in the Calbreath mine in Saluda Count-y, and would like to have the road go by the mine, was seen yesterday and gave out the following interview: "Mr. Culbreath, I understand that you have returned from Saluda and that you can give us some railroad news. We will be glad to have you tell us anything you know of the prospects of the Southern building a road from Blacksburg to Johnston." "Last week while attending court at Saluda I was asked by Mr. Alvin Eth cridge, a leading citizen of that town, whether the chief engincer, Mr. V. IJ. Wells, of the Southern, stopped over at Newberry. I told hin that I vas absent from Newberry, and he gave mc tho following information: The chief engineer and contractor, Brown, of the Southern had gone over the old Three C's line which has been graded from B3lacksburg to Union, and over the Union line down to Newberry Court House, which is partially graded, and that they traveled from Silver Street to Saluda Court Houso and that he was going to recommend to the Southern railroad to build a railroad over said line on to Johnston where it taps its line to Augusta. That it is f8 miles nearer than to go by way of Co lumbia, and it will be a main trunk line for Northern tourists. That the chief en.gineer was ordered to go over the line and to advIse as to the practiabi ity of building the same. lHe told Mr. Etheridge that, he wvas going to recomn mend the construction of the railroad and that, If they carried out his recom mendation, wvhich he. thought they would, work would be commenced with in sixty days. They were not asking for township bonds nor the aid of towns along said route. IHe said that they had lantly of money. Weo would liko, however, Instead of going by Silver Street if It would go direct from New berry Court House to Saluda." "'Would that be a more dhirect line from Newberry to Saluda than via Silver Street? "It, is about two or thrce miles out of the way to go by Silver iStrect." "If the road is built by Silver Street would the mine of the Culbreath Min ing Co. he on the line?" "No, sir, it would be about six or seven mlies from the lIne. We would like very much for it, to go by this mine as we are now geti'ng in p)ositionl to ship ore, and the shipment would b'e a considerable item to the railroads. In addition to that, to go via near the CulI brecath mine would save from two to three miles of road betweea Newberry and Saluda. If we had a raIlroad run ning by the mine we would immedi ately commence the shipmen t of the ore to the A tlanta smelter. If we are six or sevent miles ft om the railroad tue company might be forced to erect ma chInery for the-purpose of working the ore upon1 the spot."
