feelings of the neighbors. Mr. Sheppard,
the ierchatit at tle Cross Roads,---whotul
eyerybody liked-was about to guit busi

'dgefield, whichi he did between the
yetrs 1825 Itd 1830. Ilis partner, Mr.
William Colelianl, did not contintuie busi
ie-s it the old stand Or if he did, it was
for a short time only. lie. too after sonme
years left tle Cross Roads and built him
a good house niearer Iliiggins' Ferry aid
after awhile married and prospered aid
lived happily for sone years whei his
wife died and left him a widower with
several children. Jacob Trotter, who
livel oil the hillside just south of the
CioHs Roads. muoved dowin on the Little
Sititili lie was the father of Dr. Trotter,
whon I used to kio%r.
Other clianges were portenditg which
tie company felt, as colling events at
ways east their shadows before. They
passed it pleasaint though not ' very jolly
afternoon. Jesse tried to be as gay and
full of fun as ever lie told some few
minnsing storit a which made hiis comrades
litigh; but their laughter grew to be
rithtier sad when they looked at hin and
saw Iis hollow cl,eeks, and noted his
hicklistre eyes, and his once stout body
1 surely wasting away. After awhile lie
died The husiness sit the Cross Roads
was discoitiiued, and the pleasant meet.

that road a solitary tralnp, and drawn by
the spring, the cool shade, and the

the clear cool water The spring was
wlre it ever used to be and in good
order; hut the en ti had filled in around
is so deep that I could not kineel down to

a bush niear by, reauchied downu and was
able to bring up enough to show thi s it
was as good as ever. After resting awhile
in the shade of the trees and looking

wards l'ie Pleasaint. This too was a road
s well kniowun to useC as the Main street'
of Newherry is now. I .vent on as far a
lEdgehield, but did not walk all the way,
