Fraser, of Greenville, are in the city in the interest of the Charles ton exposition. Work is progressing nicely on the Central Methodist church, and when completed will be one of the handsom est edifices in the city. Mrs. Jos. L. Keitt, Mrs. M. E. Cald well and Mrs. George Jobstone of Newberry, arrived in the city yester day afternoon.-The State, Feb. 8th. Miss Susie Rountree, of Laurens, who has been visiting at Mr. E. P. Two ordinances were passed by the town council at its last meet ing. One to prevent the plying of bill poster within the city' limits withou t. a license, and the other to aid the Board of Hecalth in carrying out compulsory vaccina tion. The members of the Senior class 5f Newberry College will have an op portunity of displaying their individ uality to the individuals who will com pose the committee to examine the es says in June. The essay subjebct which has been chosen by the faculty for the Seniors is Individualism. Erskine and the Due West Female Col lege have invited Chauncy D~epew and Andrew Carnegie to deliver the annual Orations at their commencoment ex ercises in June. It they accept Due West commencement will have many visitors this ysar. These colleges have already been the means of bringing some distinguished speakers to this part of the state and we congratulate them on having high ideals when choos ing their orators. Bvnn Year. The ineeting was in charge of the Y. M. C. A. and was conducted by the Presideit, Me.'J. 13. )errick, of Missis sippi. Afler the reading of the Scrip tarcs and singing "All L.all the power of Jesuo tame" and a prayer by the pastor, Rev. M. G. G Scherer, Dr. Scherer spoke oi the three steps to the "'Thro,e of manhood tind womanhood." These three steps he said consisted of self-reverence, self-knowledge and self control. He spoke of the true beauty of the soul and of the body as being the '"shrine for the shrine of the spirit.) He closed his remarks by impressing upon his hearers that there is nothing in life that Is worth having, that is worth being that is not religious. The young men of the college were es pecially fortunate in securing so ear nest a Christian worker as Dr. Scherer to be with them on this occasion and we deeply regret that our limited space debars us from publishing his eloquent address in full. The music for the occasion was fur nished by ten young men of the Y. M. C. A. and added much to the pleasure of the evening. All who were present commend the young men very highly for the way In which they managed this part of the program.
