Rev. John W. Speake, pastor for four
years of the O'Neall Street church
preached his farewell sermon on Sunday
evening and left for his new home in
Greenville on Monday. While here he
built a new church and his work was
successful In every particular. Ils
many feiends in Newberry were sorry
to see him leave, but w!ih him success
wherever he may go.

The luncheou given on la.i Tuesday
evenIng to the gentlemen of the town
by Mayor Klettner was a most enjoy
able entertainment. The hall was dec
orated for the occasion in Unit ed States
flags and garlands and wreaths of the
natIonal colors. Add resses, wh ich added
very much to the enjoyment of the
evening, were delIvered by lion. C. L.
Blecase and Mayor Klettner. Music
wasn furnished by the West End Brass
Band.

moved into their new residence on Pope
street. We welcome them to Newberry.

Mr. Charlie Lynch of Columbia, were

Greenwood, stopped a few days with the
family of Mr. H. H. Franklin.

city Tuesday and Wednesday of this

At the recent meeting of the State
Baptist convention held at Greenwood,
Dr. Jas. McIntosh, of this city was
chosen first vice-president of the con
vention.
Col. W. 11. Hunt was chosen as mem
ber of the board of Trustees of the
Connie Maxwell Orphanage on Monday
last at, a meeting of the State Baptist
Convention held at Greenwood.
Rev. Geo. H. Waddell of the Metho
dist Orphange Columbia came up Wed
nesday and was accompanied home by
Mrs, Waddell who had been visiting
her brother Mr. Boulware of the Utopia
section.
The Ladiles of A valeigh Presbyterian
Church will have their usual Christ

Miss. Katherine A. Launey returned
to her home in Monroe N. C., Wednes

in the opera house on the 20t h is sid
to be one of the best shows on the road.
The management should be supported
and encouraged to bring good shows to
town, and our people should show their
appreciation by giving them a full

Cheif Hunter has received two more
pistols, which were stolen In the recent
Steiglitz robbery in Columbia. This
makes $42,00 worth of these goods re
covered by this oflcer, and lbe is in a
fair way to secure other missing prop-.
erty. The above pistols were found
in the possession of WVill Chahiner and
Isaiah Johnson, who had traded for
them.

slowly but surely. Three large build

The West End Graded School, and
The Newberry Knitting Mill; and
several smaller ones are in process ol
erection. Houses for rent here are
needed badly as the demand is greater
than the supply. We have heard of
some who desired to locate here but
could not find a desirable house tor
rent. Indeed they could not find a
vacant house of any krind.
