Winthrop Collogo, 1 lok I ll1, Juno 6.-Tho groat wori: at tho Stato Nor mal and Industria. CollegM is pros poring. From tino to timo The ows and Courier les given the pub lie a statoment of Iho work at Win throp. The fifth year of Winthrop has now bOOD passed. Th crucial test is over. When ih Collego doors Wero first opened md thero was a crush and ru-h here, soumo who thought they knew it all said th as they caPLed if, would soon die out; that, it was1 somet hing flew and novel. Tiimo and trial have had no such effect. Oni thm contrary the attondance has beeon (1l th stendy incroase.- No year* have thm accom modations been implo for the de mnands and the Gener-al Assembly has just provideCd for the erection of an.. other dormitory, which will affor-d sleeping apartmirouts for two' hundred additional young ladies, but this wvill not be in inll of the douitand for room. This substantial, t hiis emphatic, this lasting demand for accommodations; this constant inc-ra in atendauco, long after the glanmouur of novelty has -worn off, shows conclusively that the young women of tho State, and their parents particular-ly, aijpprecinito thle advantages of Winathr-op College. AN INDUsTRIAL coLLErU. Winthrop does niot pretend to be' a fashionable or parlor educating insti 1tution. While, of courste, the ni1ce t ies of social life are giveun attention, the young women wvho como her-o for an education aro not exp)ected1, nor are they allowed, tio siend LIeir time in the parlors or 'divide it between art, music and the palrlor. Winthrop is above all practical. Every girl *has to ar-ranigo her- own bod room and attend to her own clothos, otc., and, no matter what the course, must -take each year one of the industrial branches, whether it bo dr-essmaking, ~sewing, millinery, stonography and typewriting, cooking, drawing, hor ticulture, floriculture or dairy wvorkl. As most of the students take the four year courses it is easy to take and finish any two of tho industrial branches, or perhaps miore. Win throp College is eosentially a. work ing college.
