Saturday evening a little negro picked up the best looking bicycle OL Main street, the property of Mr. J. W. Chappell-a new $50 wheel, and appro priated it to his own use. The wheel was standing in front of Mower Co.'s store. Mr. T. 0. Williams met the little neg ro in Helena with the wheel, and seeing it was such a nice one, be. gan to question him about it. The ne gro offered to sell it for $12. Mr. Wit. llams arrested him, and by the time Mr. Chappell missed the wheel Mr. Williams had the wheel and the negrc on his way to the lock-up. The rock culvert at the west end of Friend street has been completed, and it is a good piece of work and will prove a lasting improvement. We had the first freeze-up of the sea son this morning. There was ice, plenty of it, and water faucets were frozen up and had to be thawed out. The mistakes or misprints in the ar ticle of "An Old Reb" in our last pa per, were those of the "copy holder" and not of the contributor or proof reader. Aveleigh Church building, New berry, is a very handsome one. It is of wood, but its interior is so unique and tasteful, that the wood is forgotten. Allen Jenkins, the advance agent for the Dan Packard Opera Com pany, an old newspaper man, spent yes. terday and a part of today in the city. He is a pleasant gentleman and made many friends here. Evangelist Joe Munday lectured in the opera house Sunday afternoon and Monday night to large audiences. The Domoerativ primary election foi the purpose of noriiating candidatet for Mayor and Alderman was held ir this city on Friday last. There was nt opposition to the members of the old council, except in Ward 4, and but littkc interest was taken in the election, ex cept in that ward. Last year Mr. J. C. Myers was elect. ed as Alderman from Ward 4, and or moving from the ward in September a special election was ordered to fill th( vacancy caused by the resignation o Mr. Myers. This special election was held on October 6. At this electiot Messrs. J. 1). Hornsby, J. J. Langfort and J. W. White were candidates an< Mr. White was the successful man. A the election again on Friday the ract was between Mr. White and Mr. Lang fordand Mr. Langford was the success ful candidate. During Mr. White's short term h< made a good ollicer and had under was sOme lasting improvements for hi: ward, which he will endeavor to comn plete before he vacates the oliico. Mr. J. J. Langford is a new man, o1 will be a new man on the Aldermani< Board, and his ward and the city al large will not suffer by his election. i< is young, energetic and watchful of the best interests or the city and will nakt a good representative from Ward 4. The nomination as candidates by the Democratic party of the city, of the ol council without opposition, which i equivolent to election, is a worthy recognition and endorsement the present administration of the city. The present council has done nucl in the way of permanent improvemnents such as putting in rock culverts, build. ing new bridges with rock buttment widening and fixing streets and the fire escape at the opera house; and then they have now under headway improve ments in both Wards 4 and 1, which have been for several years almost necessities and which, when completed, will be lasting. In refunding the opera house debt of the city money has been saved the taxpayers each year and iu many other ways money has been saved putting the finances of the city in bet ter shape, as the forthcoming annual report will show, than they have been for several years. Judging the admin istration by the past we feel safe in saying that at the close of the coming year, much of the inherited debt o $6,500 will have been paid and the af fairs of the city run on a cash basis with an appreciable reduction in the tax rate.
