Expires Sudenly While Attending thu Omaha Expoaition LsNt Tuesdsy Night. No sadder news was over received In Newberry than that conv/yed yester day morning in a brief telegram from Rev. Luther M. Kuhns, of Omaha, Nob , which said: "F"ather died sud denly tonight at the exposition." His death thus occurted 'T'uesday night last. He was al )ut seventy years old. There were sincere expressions of sorrow throughout the city when It became known yesterday that Dr. Kuhns was dead, and there are many - who will receive this news of his death with sadness, and his memory will be revered by all who knew him during his residence of nearly six years in Newberry. Rev. Dr. 11. W. Kuhns came to New berry from Omaha, Neb., on a visit in September, 1871, with a view to ac cepting a call as pastor of the Lutheran church. lie was the fi"st Lutheran minister to labor west oC the Missouri river, and his missionary tours brought him into close contact with the Sioux Indians, who were then very warlike. This was early in the 501. IHe l'ad many remarkcable expri iences with the Indiaus alnd his miss inary lield cov ered a vast territory in his pioneer work of 25 years. Hi visit to Newberry resilted in his acceptance of the call extended hirm by the Lutheran conglegation, and he removed here with his family a.id took charge on Jar.uaiy 1st, 1872; and his work of over s'< years is yet re feri'ed to as one of the most successful in the histo"y of the church the i.:e em bership being trebled in number di ing his pastorship. le was a good preacher aind a most efficient pastor. It was dec in a great measure to the interest he took in public affairs of town and county, so far as his efforts related to their industrial and com mercial meogress, that made him pop ulbr with all classes. Ie was a man of sound judgment and practical ideas. It was due to his energy and ability that the splendid subscriition was raised for the re-establishment of New berry College in our city. In the various avenues of life he made many warm friends by his safe counsel and the manifestation of unsellish interest. His highest aim was to serve his fe' lowien. I). Kuhns resigned the church here in September, 1878, and removed to Westminster, Md., to the general re gret of the people of Newberry. Whi:o a mission'try In the West he made an investmeni, in real estate which ad vanced handsomely in value subsequent to his removal from Newberry, and about ten years ago he again msde Omaha his home, and retired from active work as a minister. His su'+se quent visits to iievberry amounted to c ,ations, and no former resident of our city ever received a more general open-hearted welcome. This feeling he warmly reciprocated and he always had a high regard for Newberry and her peop)le. Dr. Kuhns leaves three sons, 1Rev. Lut,her M., a Lutheramn minister in Omaha; Paul, bank cashier, and .John - Hay. His wife died somewhat more than a year ago. Since her death Dr. Kuhns has spent his time in tiavel, visiting the d-awiiamn Islands, WVest Indies, and the WVest. His years wcre i full of useful work.-Observer.
