Last night and this morning a slight
edge of the hurricane reported on the
F'lorida coast must have struck us

The Comptroller General was ex
pected in Newberry yesterd ay to make
settlement with t,he county oflicers, but
called the appointment off until after
21st instant.
Alderman Cabaniss received a tele
gram on Friday announcing the death
of his mother in Shelby, N. C. We ex
tend to Mr. Cabaniss our deepest sym

Mr. Birdie Boozer, of Ridgeway, has

Mr. R. P. ["air, representative of the
Standard Oil Company, after spending
a few days in Newberry with his father,
left yesterday to take a v'acation of a
few weeks at Hlendersonville, N. C.
Messrs. JTohnstone & Welch have
been employed to assist In the prosecu
tion of the persons charged with the
murder of Mrm. Pat Bowers at Little
Mountain. The accused will be tried
at Lexington at the next term of the
cou rt.
Miss Helen Goggans, daughter of
Mr. Jno. C. Goggans, was the success

tend the Wheat Growers' Convention
at Greenwood. The regularly elected
delegates were not able to attend and
those gentlemen go as alternates to
represent Newberry.
A negro stole a cow from another
negro living on the plantation of )r.
Weir in Laurens County on Friday
night last and brought it to Newberry
a# dt sold it Saturday morning. The
parties owning the cow have recovered
it and will soon have the negro in the
lockup.
Salunda and Newborry Telephone Line.
The force of hands erecting the
Saluda and Newberry telephone line
has reached town and are putting up
poles in the city. The line will come
into town up Scott's creek under the
railroad trestles and up the street in
front of the jail to Pool's stables and
from there to Summer Bros.' store. The
line it is said, is to be completed by
next week, when we can chat with our
friende over the river.

Washington, August, 12.- -Secretary

he has not decid-d detinitely to do so,

should it be decided to issue it when
the thirteen r.gimcents now being or
ganized are comlpleted.
It is said that, additional troops may
be needed to relieve those who have
served some time in the tropical coun
tries. It is also suggested that it may
be deemed advisable to increase the
army of Gen. Otis.
Secretary Loot has under considera
tion suggestions from Gen. l3rooke for
bringing home some of the troops now
in ('uba. It has been practically de
termined to have five battalions sent to
the United States.

Miss Marie Caldwell died It, the home
of her father, Mlr. lRobt. T. Caldwell,
in this city on Friday evening last In
the eighteentlh year of her age. Mliss
Marie was a lovely, gentle, Christian
young lady and was loved by all who
knew her. Her remains were ;nterred
on Saturday afternoon in IRosemont
Cemetery in the presence of a large
gathering of sorrowing friends and
loved ones. The sympathy of the en
tire community goes out to the family
in their bereavement.

this county will be opened on Thursday
morning promptly at 1) o'clock in the
Graded School building. By appoint
