McObec, A atOUKINO itIME. A Little Wihio ahlld Killed by Two Little Negroes-Hota In Jail. A shocking crimo was committed in No. 6 Township on Tuesday of last wtck. Johnnie Harp, live-year-old step-son of Mr. T. It. Sanders, was shot with a pistol by two little negroes and died from the effects of the wound on Fi day. On Sunday before the shooting Mr. Sanders saw two sons of Jerry Carter, colored, coming from the direction of his watermelon patch, and on g' down and invest, igating, found thr havoc had been played with his melons, some tad been cut and slashed and several had been pulled and hidden on the outside. Mr. Sanders went to the father of the two little negroes and compelled him to give them a sound thrashing. On Tuesday as Mr. Sanders was sit ting on the piazza at his dwelliig, his little step-son went down to Carter's house, a few hundred yards, to play with t,he little negroes. lie had been there but a few minutes before the re port of a pistol was heard and the little negroes ran out to the field to hide. Mr. and Mrs. Sanders ran down to Caeter's house to see what had hap pened, and were met. at the door by little Johnnie, who said: "Mama, see where son shot me," pulling his little jacket aside showing ia terrible wound, the ball having entered just above the stomach and lodged just under the skin in his back, going clear through him. Dr. Longshore was summoned and did all he could for his patient, but he died from the elfect: of ,he wound Fri day morning. The little fellow, before he died, stated in the preseuce of several per selns that the yotng, st negro, who is about eight years old, held hihn; while the other, who is about ten years old, shot him. The negroes claim that the younger shot the little fellow accidentally while playing with an old rusty pistol that Ca'rter clains had been lying around the house for a longti me unloaded-but states that he had put iL ball in it that morning to carry oul, with him and for not to take it. 'T'le Coroner went up Friday and hold an inquest at which the facits as related above were brought out. The verdict of the jury was: That Johnnie Harp came to his death from a pistol shot wound ilillicted by the hand of Edward Carter on 18th July. 18i9, from whi -' he died on the 21st, with Mortica Carter as acce.sory. The two little negro criminals were brought to town and lodged in jail to await trial. We were told that as the ollicers left with the boys, or were about to leave, Carter, their father said in an under tone, "you can take them if you want to, but somebody will catch - before morn ing." A warrant for his arrest was issued immediately, but he could not be found after the warrant was issued. (B,l I.Of Wollall's 00lcEo, Richmnolll, Va.) INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. '1'he crowd in attendance is about as usual, especially are the negroes on i.'.nd and at their accustomed seats in the court, room. .,udge Ernest (ary Is presiding. l11 looks refreshed, having come to New berry from the mountains of North Carolina, where he has been recuper ttting his health. As he catme into court on Monday uorning a large waiter of be,autiful, fragrant Iowers was placed on his desk, being sent by some friends. Solicitor Sease and Stenographer Campbell were at, their desks rea'y for business. Solicitor Sense hntilded out to the grand jury sever:l indictments. His Honor in handing the Indiet ments to the jury stated that it was a time ,.onored custom for the presiding judge to charge the grand jury as to their duties. But as his predecessor nt the first, tenm of court, for the year had doubtless charged taent fully, it was useless for him to rehash and re peat, to them. lie charged the jury as to their duty in finding bills, that they were only to make the charge and not try the ease. lie also charged the jury that on indictments of murder, where the killing was intentional, that they should find a "true bill" and let the plea of justilication or self-defence be made in court. lie stated that, the oh ject of court was to stop crime and that, they were not there on parade or for show, but. for business. The object is to suppress crime, and the way to sup press crime is to punish the en rim inal. If ona knows he is to be punished he will-be slow to commit crime. Let no sentiment cir sy mal,t,hy keep you fromi doing your dr.ty, for it is a duty every good citizen owes his country to see that criminals are brought to justice. It is not your fatult yo a are h--re, it is be cause you owe this duty to the State, to protect the law abidin; citizens and society and see shat the criminal gets his deserts on the chain ang or in the pcnitcntiaa. lie should not be al lowed to :!"tk al.mt, invading the rights of 'w abiding citizens. We are not here. (n pleasurse bent, but to discharge tc pabi tc duty. It is neces sary for every one of us to come strictly un to the I' :. rk. and not to block the progress of ju-,iee. No one individual can run t court, of justie-all must do their full dUt,\ . 1 am not, eriticising, for I have no criticism to make of you or other grand juries, but too often criminals have gone free when it should not have been the case, which causes persons to criticize those con nected with the courts. A grand juror is a friend to law and society and an enemy to the criminal, who deserves no sypi.athy at the hands of the law. You should present all things as they come to you. I suggest, that if any witness be not promplTt ini coiming before you that you mfake a note of it and replort them to this court, and I will see that they are not paid for the time. They are being paiLd by the State and should be on hand. The indiet, ments were handed the foreman and the juiry r.e. tired.
