Mower was a delegate from the A. R. P. Presbyterian Synod to the U. P. General Assembly in session this week in Omaha, Neb., but could not attend on account of pressing business at home. Chief Hunter arrested a young man named Purdy at the cotton mill Wednesday who wts wanted in Gcen wood on the charge of assault and bat tory with intent to kill. The Green wood ollicers came cU)wn Wednesday and carried the pr-isoner back on the evening train. Capt. A. P. Pifer, for many years an honored citizen of Nowborry but re cently Prosident, of thu Norfolk, (Va.,) College for young ladles has resigned and will leave Norfolk on July 1. We should be glad to see him return to Nuwberry and hope the way may open to sectre him and his family as citizens of our town. Rev. A. G. Voigt, D. D., who has been a citizen of Newberry for several years as professor in the Seminary and College and who has made many friends here, wvill in a few days move to Wil mington, N. C., he having the position of pastor of t.he Lutheran church of that p)lace. We regret to lose Dr. .Voigt and his family from Newberry. -We commend them most heartily to the good peole of Wilmington. We have been receiving and posting bulletins of the war for the past six weeks or since tho beginning of hos tilities. They are frequently very un satisfactory and sometimes givo uts items thatt, have already been publish ad. While that is true still we get news hero in the aftetnoon by the bulletins that we would not get until the Atlanta Journal next morning. The newspapers have on severa I oc casions puI-lished an item one day anu contradicted it the next. 'That cannot. well be helped, for in order.to keop up they are obliged occasionally to make forecasts and sometimes they will miss in their calculations and of course that changes what they have already re ported. There has naturally been a good deal or criticism of the news furnished through tho bulletin service and some of it no doubt very justly. We wish it could be otherwise but we see no way to change it. The people who criticize the bull-. tin service as a-r.ule are those who do not contribute anything to secure it and yet are generally the first to rush to the board and read the bulletins as they are put up. These bulletins are being paid for by several gentlemen contributing a small sum each week and whenever they de sire them discontinued they' will be shut off. For two weeks when they were first started The Herald and News paid for them without any assis tance. If those who pay for the bullet,int de sire them discontinued we will be glad to obey their commands. As to criti cisms from those who do not contri bute to them, why that does not count for much, and we do not see that it, is any of their business. The Catalogue of Newberry College for 189--)8 has just been issued. It makes a good showing for the session of the College just closing. Th3 enrolment, is larger than at any time since the relocation of the College at Newberry twenty-one years ago. It is gratifying to us and to the people of Newberry tonote the sueccss which the College has attained. In the senior chiss there are 16; in the junior 21; in the sophomore 22; in the freshman 50; special students 2; makling u total in the Collegiate De partment of 111. In the senior preparatory depart ment there are 33; in the junior 0; and post-graduates 8; making a grand total in all departments of 161. That we take it is a good showing for Newberry College.
