It is stated that a battallion will be sent from the South Carolina troops to tie Philippine islands., That would be a great trip for 6u boys if they should happen to be seat. There will be a pIenic at the close of Miss Daisy Cannon's-school, at Hartford Academy, on Saturday, May 28th. The public is invited to ecome and bring their baskets well filled. The news of another war ohould not divert us frmn the observance of a day which recalls the heroism and daring of those who fought and died in the cause of their country a generation ago. And it will not. The old Confederate soldiers will be remer.bured and loving and tender hands will spread beautiful flowers upon the resting place of those who have passed over the river. This tribute of love will not bo neglected this year. Committees have been appointed from the James D. Nance Camp and the Jno. M. Kinard Camp who will have charge of the decoratians at the monumentand also at the old grave yard and Rosemont. The Graded School children will form at the building and march to the monument in rear of t,he court house. The exercises will he held at the monument at 5 o'clock this afternoon. Prayer will be offered by the Chaplain of the James D. Naneo Camp, Rev. E P. McClintock, and a short address will be de'ivered by the Rev. C. W. Creighton, of the Methodist church. After this Is over the committees ap pointed will proceed to Rosemont and the old graveyard with their floral tri butes and decorate the graves. Langford's Compm- t ny, the Newberry Guards, at this time, but our roll is incomplete, thereforo I we will not give the company roll until I it i6 completed. Tuosday evening when-the Newberry quards reached Columbia they formed I in line near the Union shed and narch ed up Gervias and Assembly streets to i the postoffice, where we took street cars r for Hyatt's Park (Camp Ilerbe) and I upon our arrival there were given tents and began camp life. Wednesday morning Capt. Langford c was made the first officer of the day at I Camp Ellerbo and his men were the I first to do guard duty. This is a hiah c compliment to Capt. Langford. To c mention the many, many compliments i that have been conferred upon him t would take too much space. t Friday afternoon we were examined t for United States service. In this ex- a amination 43 of our noble and patriotie r boys failed, many of whom wore zeal- t ous and faithful and had done much for e the company. Capt. E. B. Fuller, who t is in command of the examining depart- 1 ment, expressed sympathy for the brave boys who wanted to serve their a country, but could not be permitted to a do so. Our First Lieutenant, R. H. Wearn, returned yesterday to his company. Almost ever since we have been here i Lieutenant Wearn has been detailed to receive and arrange companies as they came in over at the Fair Grounds. This is a compliment to Lieutenant Wearn. A r. T. 0. Stewart was elected Second Lieutenant, to fill the vacancy made by M r. B. M. Aul. Every man in our company is devoted to Capt. Langford and would follow I him anywhere, and Capt. Langford is equally devoted to his men. He is al- i ways ready to do all in his power for their welfare. There is not a day but that he comes to each tent in person and inquires after the welfare of the inmates. Sergeant J. W. Daniels is the only man in our company who is sick, and he is not seriously sick. Fire was discovered in Camp Icllerbe, ti-nt No. 6 of the Newberry Guards. The Excelsior Fire Company respond cd promptly and the fire was soon ex tinguished. Tho loss sustained is esti mated at from 10 to 15 cents. No in- e surance. Recruits are coming into our compa nly. We now havo 05 men. Rumor here says that four companies from this regiment will go to the Phil ippine Islands and that the Newberry Guards will be one of these compa nies. F. Tho Boys Itoturned. About 40 per cent of the boys in the New berry company have been rejected, and they have returned home. T1he examining physician we have no doubt knows his business but some of his rejections seem very queer to us. Some who have been rejected are as fine specimens of manhood as can be found and would make as good and efficient soldiers as any that have been accepted. Trake for instance, Orderly Thos. H. Pope, a fine specimen of physical development, erect, broad shouldered with good chest, and a fine fellow who would have made en ex cellent oflicer and a good soldier, yet he is rejected because of a slight de. feet in one eye, and that too in the face of the fact that he is one of the best shots in the company as was evi denced in a p)ractice held by the comn pany some time ago, and there are others. Still we suppose the examiin g p)hysician was following instructions, but we say it, seems a little strange that men in a voluntary army would he re jected for these.reasons. Tihen there were ot,hers who did not come up to the standard in weight. It, is hoped, however, that the New berry Guards will have enough recruits who will be accepted to keep t,he com panny intact. T1he Herald and News would suggest that the boys wvho have been returned to us go to work and organize a home company, and we suggest Orderly Thoes H. Pope for Captain of the home company and that it be known as Comn pany IB, Ne wherry Guards. T1here should be a company here at home and these boys who have had ex perience in dIrill would be the ones to formr it. A Warninig.
