Tho North and the South again united. Among the many social fea tures of the week was the very pretty wedding of Miss Florence Evelene Todd to M1r. James Jefferson Lane, an alderman of Nowberry,,South Carolina. The marriage ceremony, which was performed on Tuesday evening, Janu ary 11th, at the home of the bride, 3313 North 17t.i street, by the Rov. Joseph R. Moore, of the Church of the Resurrection, Broad and l'ioga streets, with the full Episcopal service, was at tended by relatives and a few int.imato friends of the family. To the strains of the Lohengrin wed ding march, as given by a very fino or chestra, the bridal procession was soon by the expectant guests, as it slowly wound its course down the stairway, in full view of the assemblage in the Irawing-roonA. The ushers, Mr. Milton E. Todd, a brother of the bride, and Mr. Thoias Bawn, made way for the approach of the bridal procession, which was led by the ofliciating clergyman. The hoppy groom, attended by his friend, Mr. F. L. Bynum, of the law firm of Mower & Bynum, of Newbeiry, S. C., As best man, was followed by the maid )f-honor, Mi!s Margaret Shott, a pretty, light brunette, gowned in pink ihina silk, trimmed profusely with platted ruffies, carrying a boquet of pink pinks. The seventieth meeting of this Convocation, which is the mission ary organizalion of the Episcopal Church ein the upper tier of coun. ties of South Carolina, has just been held in our city. The meeting opened with the Holy Communion early Wednesday miorning, followed by a re treat for the clergy, lead by the lit. Rev. Bishop Capers. A retreat is a devotional service, at which the Bish op (in this present instance) delivers addresses of a purely spiritual nature to the clergy under his charge. Hie object is to give thom helpful sugges tions and instructionc for their sacred work, and encouragen 'nt in the maui fold difficulties inoidet to their labors in the prosecution of their high calling. His addresses were upon "Our Call Ing" and "Our Helps and Hindrances." A pleasatit feature of this retreat was the presence of many of the pastors of Newberry, who united w. i the Convo cation in hearing the godly instruetion of the Rt. Bev. Bishop. It was an oc casion which all who enjoyed it will long remember. The Bishop was most happy, both in his selection of a subject and in his treatment of it. A fter these services, the Convocation was called to its business sessions, Bishop Cal era in the chair. The usual prelininaries.over, the Rev. T. D. Brat ton was elected Secretary and Treas urer for the ensuing year. The stand ing committees were then appointed, when the Convocation took a recess for dinner. The afternoon session at 4 o'clock was devoted to the missionary reports from the various clergy present. The Bishop in opening the session spoke of the ex cellont work being done by his theo logical students, from the school at Sewance, Tennessee, who voluntarily offered to give all their holiday season to missionary work in South Carolina. Of these students, Mr. Witaell is at work in Gafney and Blacksburg, Mr. Boyd in Winnsboro and Qhester, Dr. Waring in Yorkville, and Mr. Bean in Spartanburg. The reports of the missionaries were unconscious testimonies to the faith ful and incessant labors of these worthy men, and showed a gratifying progress throughout the field commit ted to their care. Their work is done on railroads, bicycles and in buggies, from house to house and town to town, many of them being constantly on the road doing the work of evangelists. With the exception of the Rev. Dr. McCUllough, the well known and ven arhble Arch Deacon, of the Convoca tion, the . clergy who compose this band of missionaries are young and ac tive men, full of youthful vigor and equal to the burdens of a missionary life. The first day's work closed with a service at 7.30 p. m., when Bishop Capers delivered a splendid sermon upon the subject "Citizenship in Church and State:" his text was "Render unto Caesar the things which be Caesars, and unto God the things that are God's." On the second day, Thursday, the session op)ened, as always, with morn ing prayer. At this service the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. 0. McR. Holmes was baptized b)y the Bishop, assisted by the Rector, Rev. W. S. Holmes. The Convocation may claim another mem bor in little Nicholas Schoek Holmes. Who knows but he may sonmc day join the white-robed band of clergy who gathered about the little new born Christian? The business meeting being called, the Rev. Mr. Holmes delivered a most thoughtful and useful essay upon the theme, "Concentration in Mission Work," in which lie clearly outlined a wisoi policy of the Church in conicen trating her force of men and money in sicad of diffusing it, and showed how this could best be done practically. The subject was further discussed by most of the members, both clerical and lay, and finally summarized by the Bishop from his larger view point. In the afternoon the matter of sup port for theological education was dis cussed, when the R1ev. Cantey Johnson, of Rock 11111,and Mr. Witseli explained the objects and operation of the St. Luke's Society, which is occupied in raising funds for this purpose. There are fourteen candidates for the minis try for whose support the Bishop holds himself responsible. HIe must look to his chiurrh member's to supply the means to fuh.lll his obligations to these young 'null. The next meeting of Convocation was fixed for the 28th September in Blacks burg. The appointments for this meet ing were then made, when the Convo cation adjourned for the day. At 7.20 p. mn. the chancel of tne church was filled with the clergy pres ent. Trho Rev. Cantey Johnson preached a most interesting sermon on Missions. Bishop Capers confirmed two candi dates presented by the Rector, Messrs. William Schonck and Robert Miller. The Convocation feels itself very much indebted to the ladies and gentle men who have so kindly and willingly furnished the sweet music which has been so enjoyable a feature of the miieetin gs. The members, each and all,.express their warm app)reciation of the cordial hospitality of their hosts.
