"uff left Newberry Sun day about noon to carry his brother as far as Saluda river, thinking he would got back to the city by dark, but was somewhat delayed in returning, and reached the crossing of Rocky branch, about two and a lialf miles from town, near Mr. Lawson Paysinger's, about good dark. At this crossing thero is a sudden hend in the road, and it is a low, swampy place. Just as he reached here someone halted his horse, whilo another one covered him with a pistol and went through his pockets, reliev ing him of what money he had, which was a pretty good sum, all of his keys, and some papers, among which is his registration certillcate. Mr. RuOT did not recognize the partics, but, says they were negroes and that they were disguised. He has oflicers of the law on track of the guilty parties, and it is hoped that they will be caught and dealt with severely. It was a bold and daring robbery. Masonic Supiper. The Masonic brethern of Newberry had a most delightful entertainment last night. The regular installation of officers was had and after that was over an elegant repast was enjoyed at their hall at which not only the Masons themselves were piresent but al8o their wives. The committee of arrangements con sisted of A. C. Jones, Eduard Scholtz and M. E. Wickliffe, and the supper was all that could be expected or de sired. After the inner man had been satis fled there was speech making and a flow of wit and wisdom was enjoyed. Col. 0. L. Schumport acted as toast master in his usual happy and felicit ous style and presented the sentiments and introduced those who responded. The first toast was Amity Lodge, No 87, A. F. M., responded by A. C. Jones, W. M. Our Fraternity was responded to by [Hon. C. T. Wycho of Prosperity. Our Brother Fellow Craftsmen, by Col Geo. Johnstone. Our Guests, by Rev. J. S. Porter. The speeches were good and eloquent and greatly enjoyed by all who were present. The tables were served by the daugh ters of the Masons and everything was as pleasant as it could be. C., Dec. 20, 1897.-Since the publication of the registration no tice of the 29th uIt. based on an "off hand" decision of the Attorney General to the effect that there should he no registration under the understanding clause after Wednesday, 8th Inst, I have received notification from the Attorney General's ollice of a change of this decision, and that the present Supervisors of Registration are au thorized to open the books of registra tion on January 1, 1898. It was clear that the understanding clause applies up to and including January 1, 1898, but it was a question whlether or not there should be registration on that date, it not being a "'first Monday ." The A ttorney General has finally con strued the Registration Act as author izing registration January 1st. T1he requirements for registration oni that, date will be the same as last year and this year, and those registering then, as well as these registered in 189t0 and 1897, are electors for life. The hours fixed by law for registration are from 9 a. in. to 3 p. m. So the understanding clause expires Saturday, January 1, 1898, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Yours faithfully, A. 1E. P.
