Newberry we. the pioneer in build Ing a cotton mill to be operated exclus ively by steam. It proved a success and is one of the best aills in the South. In fact we doubt if the e is a better anywher and it has been pay lug g od dividends on the investment. She was also the pioneer in Iltis se tion of the State in horing an artesian well in order to get. water for a stem of water works for the town. So far the well has been a success. While it is not a flowing well yet the supply of water as tested is abundant. Other towns have gone to work to establish water works and are to get their water in the same way. Our sys to will be Completed in about six weeks or two months and why could we not have a little water works festi val and invite the other towns and eit ies to come over and spend a day or two with us and see our system tested. We could get reduced rates on the rail roads and we could easily have the town full of people. We only make the suggesttion and if our people conclude it would be a good thing we will help to get the thing on foot. The inauguration of a system of wat or works, fornishing our people pure and healthful drinking water and ex cellent protection against tire, marks an important epoch in our history as a town and it would he altogether appr priate to tilttingly celebrate the event. COME TO NE11 IS:ERRY. Thet members of Newberry Lodge No. '46. Knightsof l'ythias have invit4d the Grand Liodge t , hold the next an nual convention in Newberrv. The city council joins in this invitation. And why should the next convention not be held here; We base a good town and our local lodge is one of the strongest and best lodges in the State. It wvill helpl our tow%n to ha-:e theneen ventions. for every one who eomies ht- v gots away from New\ berry w% i h a fa vorable impression atid w aint to comt again and it could not well be other wise. It w ill do 11t, 0irdt in Nowbei ry good to have the I ia Lodge meet with us. and we et sure it will do the urand L.odge ,ood ti come to Newherry. Cone along gentlemen. we will 'ive yot. a hearty welcome ant endeawrot to make your stay ano- usea The Grand Lodge' meets in annual session in Anderson today. The Vandercook eause whieb is he Ing arigued in the United States ir icut Court in Charleiton this week strikes at the very root of the dispen sarv. Vanderec.ok & Co. elaim that they have a right to shiip wine into this St.ate and store it and sell it in un broken packatges to the consumers. If that be true and that position is stus tained the props at-c gone from under the dispensary system as at p)resent operated. . We understand that Gov. Ellerbe's purpose will be to call n extra session of the Legislature in case the State loses the ease and put the license so high that no one can atford to selt even in unbroken packages. Mr. J. P. K. Biryn is lighting the case again " the dispensar-y and if there 1s anything id it he will f1nd it out. On the other hand Attorney General Barber- expect,s to quote as authority for the position he will take .ludge Simonton 's own decision, and he cimhs that unless Judt(ge Simnonton revorses his formetr opinions the State is sture to win. It is an interesting tigh t. The dispensary has been in the courts from its inception and the p)robability is that it will remain there for a long time yet to come. We do not, see Col. Gant.t's 1 lead light but we have not seen in any other- pa puer where he made any spe-ci lie charge or offered any evidence to subIstanutiatte what ho had alreadly charged. We trust that Coy. FMilerbe will now, while there is reason and excuse for it, pLush the movestigat ion of the d isjpeng sarj matter. Seruggs and (;ast on werec arrested and t,hey treated the mntter somewhat as a joke. We are expect log Gov. Ellerbe to see to it that so uerious a mattter is not a joke. True what was taken or appropriated was a very small affair and they may have meanit no wronig bumt this inve~tst.Igationm If pushed many lead to somnethi ng mnoro important. If it is to stop here and there is noth lng more why you better tur-n Sc-uggs and-Gaston loose after- tirst giving them a good reprimand. A gmeat many pteople have a very prong notion that there areu some very gweh larger fIsh in this aimddle than haVe yet been caught, and these same people will consider this whole mate very much as a force if the invest iga --ion stops whore it is, Let all the light be turned on, and if there is any foundation for the many vague charges and insintuations we have heard, the peopio should know it. -4f not, those who are suspicioned should be vindicated. We do not l'elievo every rumor that floats around, but there are so many loopholes and op portunities arnd temptations a bout the management of the dispensary that a litle Investigating would do no harm.
