Another Fruitless Raid by the State Con stables. It seems to be a hard matter for the State constables to make a successful raid in Newberry. Last Friday the three who are stationed here spotted what they thought was a suspicious iookjing box in the C. N. & L. depot at Newberry. It was addressed, Wil lianis & Co. Before they took poss -. sion United States Commissioner Reid and United States Constable BAx ter began to investigate and found there were no stamps on the box and if it were whiskey they was entitled to it, so they took posiestion. This was late in the afternoon and several persons having beard of the raid went to the depot. The State constables went on to their boarding house and some thoughtless person fired a couple pistol shots. The police were soon on band but there was no trouble prescnt, past, or impending. Mr. Baxter moved the suspicious looking box to town and put it in a room and locked the door, and put the keys in his pocket. Next morning he got several persons to go with him to so-e the box opened, among the nuimber being Msr. Senn of the board of control. When the top was prized ot there was found in the box as pretty a lot of bacon as you disired to see. The box was returned to the depot. These are the facts as we have been able to obtain them.
